Super Mario Odyssey, one of the launch titles for the Switch, gives players a reminder back to the days ofSuper Mario Galaxyand evenSuper Mario 64. The game had great gameplay as well as graphics that arefar superior to the other Mario games, even if it is on a newer console. The bosses in this game were mostly the new threat of the Broodals, similar to the Koopalings from previous games, but there were also some other creative and unique boss fights that allowed Mario to show off his new abilities with his trusty friend, Cappy. This is a showing of theten hardest bossesin the game along with a sound strategy on how to best deal with them.

10Bowser

While Bowser may seem like the big, head-honcho of the game, his fight is not as difficult as many others would think. He starts off throwing his hat towards Mario, making Mario have to counter throw his hat to stop it. He’ll then wield the hat, running over to Bowser to punch him. He’ll block most hits, spinning around with his tail. Jump over that and keep punching, sending him into a wall. He’ll get angry, summoning shockwaves around the arena to hit Mario. Jumping over them and waiting as he throws his hat, summoning clones with them, will make this fight pretty easy.

9Harriet

One of the Broodals, Harriet, specializes in bombs. She skips around while using her hair to throw bombs at Mario. He can hit them back at this point, knocking off her hat and allowing him to jump on her head. He can also wait until she spins around and slams two bombs down, letting Mario do it a little bit easier.

After she’s hit, she’ll laugh and fly around, dropping bombs around that can create lava pools. She can be stopped if you hit a bomb directly under her as she spawns it, skipping most of this phase. Rinse and repeat, she’ll be finished in no time.

8Rango

Another of the Broodals, Rango, attacks with hats. He’ll toss them around, similar to a boomerang, needing Mario to hit them with Cappy to flip them over. Mario then needs to jump on one, flying into the air and spinning around while Rango looks for them. Landing on Rango will deal damage. After this, Rango will hide in his hat, bouncing around and chasing Mario. In later fights, he’ll move very fast, needing Mario to juke him out at times to dodge him. He can throw multiple hats too, harming Mario if he neglects to focus on more than one.

7Mechawiggler

Mechawiggler is fought in the Metro Kingdom and requires Mario to use his tank form to attack. As the machine scales the buildings, it will shoot electric blasts at Mario. At a certain point, it will shoot a bunch of electric blasts and begin to light up blue. Mario can shoot it repeatedly, following its pattern to do harm. After the first time this is done, it will run into walls, using a stream of light to telegraph its path as it charges forward. It can track you, so ensure you’re constantly moving to not get hit.

6Madame Broode

Madame Broode is the leader of the Broodals and uses her pet to attack Mario. It wears a hat and charges at him, telegraphing its path as it does. Mario will need to lob Cappy at it twice, once to knock off the hat, and again to take control of it. Broode will be angered by this, trying to hit Cappy off her pet to relinquish control from you. As you pull away, she will hold on for as much as she can, allowing you to hop out and slam her in the face with her pet. This fight is particularly straightforward, but in the later interactions with her, she will move much faster, and her pet will have more hats.

5Topper

Topper is the first boss you fight in the game, also being one of the Broodals. He attacks with green hats, laying down and spinning around with his hats to try and hit Mario. How many hats he is wearing determines how many times Mario needs to hit him with Cappy to expose his head, allowing him to jump on his head and deal damage. He then hides in his hat, summoning multiple hats to move across the arena and bouncing around the walls. Mario can use Cappy to defend himself from the hats, destroying fake hats and bouncing back the real one.

4Mollusque-Lanceur

This fight occurred in the Seaside Kingdom while trying to free the Sparkle Water. After knocking him off the water pump, he’ll get angry, moving around the water and shooting spike balls in Mario’s way. Mario will have to use a Gushen to constantly keep up with him.

When he catches up, he’ll have to hover over his head, shooting water down onto his lava-covered head to cause it to grow. After it grows fully, that will count as a hit. He’ll speed away, shooting many more spike balls at Mario and spinning. While he’s spinning, he is unable to be touched as well. This fight can be made easier by paying attention to his path in order to cut him off.

3Cookatiel

Cookatiel is fought in boiling hot stew, making Mario have to use a Lava Bubble to attack him. While fighting, she will shoot bell peppers and spike balls at him as he moves around. Leaving the Lava Bubble for any reason will kill Mario, having him burn three times and lose all his HP. After a while, Cookateil will barf, allowing Mario to swim along the path she makes to reach her head, jumping on her head to damage her. After each hit, the path she creates with her barf will change the pattern, mixing a bit of platforming in with the regular path she makes. After three hits, she’s good to go.

2Spewart

Spewart is the hardest of the Broodals simply because of his area control. He can spit poison around the arena, limiting Mario’s ability to move around freely. However, Cappy can be used to clear the poison out in a specific path, and luckily, touching it will not instantly kill Mario. Hitting him with Cappy will allow Mario to jump on his head, clearing any poison on the ground out of the way. He then will hide in his hat, moving rapidly around the arena spewing poison, bouncing on walls similar to the hats from Topper. Mario can change his path by throwing Cappy at him, sending him in a different direction away from him. This will make the arena covered in more poison, however, but as long as you use Cappy to clear the way, it should be no problem.

1Ruined Dragon

The furthest looking thing from a Mario enemy, this dragon is pretty difficult for most players, mixing area control with timing. Fighting it, it will breathe electric breath that will spawn vertical rings of electricity that will chase Mario. These can be jumped over or simply avoided. Then, the dragon will slam its head down, spawning horizontal rings that will overlap each other around the area. Mario will need to dodge them as he jumps on his nose, using Cappy to lift pins off him, ground-pounding him in his weak point to damage him. However, you’ll have to hurry before he wakes up and throws Mario off him. As you hurt him, the number of pins you’ll have to lift off him will increase.
