10Why Did Laguna Never Reveal He Was Squall’s Father? (Final Fantasy 8)
InFinal Fantasy 8, it’s revealed in a cutscene thatLaguna was actually Squall’s father. It’s a great reveal that explains their connection… so it’s a shame that the game fails to explore this connection even more.
As a result, Squall is kept in the dark about who his father really was, even after meeting him firsthand! While he’s perfectly happy not knowing about this identity, it’s still somewhat saddening that both father and son never manage to reconcile like they wanted.

9What Happened To Banon? (Final Fantasy 6)
Banon is the leader of the Returners andone of the key figures early on in Final Fantasy 6. The fact that he even becomes a temporary playable character during the game’s early journey proves just how important this character really is.
So, it’s a shame that this character just disappears after the advent of the World of Ruin. While most people surmise that he died along with the rest of the Returners, the lack of any closure surrounding the same is still pretty annoying regardless.

8Was Aerith Meant To Say Alive All Along? (Final Fantasy 7)
Aerith’s death is one of the most impactful moments in the history of video games. It happens suddenly and without warning, prompting players to go through the rest of the game without a dedicated healer at their side.

However, there are moments in later dungeons where Aerith actually has dialogue if players hack her into their party. There’s also Aerith’s legendary ghost that mostFinal Fantasy 7players are quite familiar with, making everyone wonder ifAerith was meant to survive her demiseat the hands of Sephiroth all along.
7Why Did Kuja Save Zidane And His Friends? (Final Fantasy 9)
Kuja is a diabolical antagonist who serves as a thorn in the side of Zidane and his party every step of the way. The final dungeon ends witha climactic confrontation against the powerful Trance Kuja, and it’s a shame that Necron stole his thunder at the end of the game.
However, for some reason, he decides to save the gang with his last breath despite wanting to destroy the entire world just mere minutes ago! It’s an unnecessary moment of redemption, with the game justifying it in a half-baked manner with Kuja’s statement, explaining that he felt alive for a mere moment after being defeated in battle.

6Was Siegfried Meant To Play A Bigger Role In The Game? (Final Fantasy 6)
Siegfried is a pretty unique character inFinal Fantasy 6, but ends up being nothing more than a joke as the story goes on. However, it seems that bigger plans were in store for this character other than just being a bumbling treasure thief.
After all, he does mention how he has a doppelganger that players should be worried about, and Ultros even talks about how he wants to impress Siegfried with his antics. These elements are just explored at a surface level, and any questions about this character are left unexplained.

5Why Did Irvine Never Talk About The Party’s History As Orphans? (Final Fantasy 8)
Final Fantasy 8has one of the worst plot twists in the game, with the memory loss caused by using Guardian Forces causing everyone to forget that they stayed in the same orphanage at one point. However, there was one character who had a vivid recollection of this past all along.
Despite knowing everyone in the party, Irvine never mentions the fact that they have a history until later on in the story. While he does justify this act, it feels more like a contrivance to keep a sense of mystery in the plot instead of being a well-thought-out decision from his end.

Vivi hasone of the more tragic stories inFinal Fantasy 9. However, a silver lining comes at the end of the series when his supposed children are shown at the end of the game.
However, the game made it clear that these mages were made by a mysterious element called Mist that disappeared from the world after the events at the Iifa Tree. So, it’s rather odd that new Black Mages are present in the world regardless.

3Why Does No One Know About Jecht? (Final Fantasy 10)
Final Fantasy 10features a recurring pilgrimage where a summoner is accompanied by their guardians to complete the trails of every Temple of Yevon and gain powerful aeons in their quest to temporarily stop Sin. Suffice it to say, this group becomes the hope of Spira, with every figure being well aware of their identities.

This makes it pretty odd that absolutely no one remembers Jecht in the main party despite him being one of Braska’s guardians. It’s a rather odd inconsistency that is never explained properly in the game.
2Where Does The Name Izunia Come From? (Final Fantasy 15)
Final Fantasy 15is a game full of wasted potential, and fans can only wonder how great this game would’ve been had Square Enix not fumbled the ball during its development. One of the best parts of this gameis undoubtedly its charismatic protagonist, Ardyn Izunia.
His name is later revealed to be Ardyn Lucis Caelum, making players wonder where the Izunia name even comes from. The explanations have been woefully inadequate, with most people surmising that Izunia was actually the true name of the Royal Family ages ago before changing for good.

1How On Earth Did Cid Survive After Blowing Himself Up? (Final Fantasy 4)
Final Fantasy 4featuresan excellent and tightly-woven story, but the question of how Cid survived after blowing himself up is still a source of confusion and debate among fans. He seemingly sacrificed himself when the party is trying to escape the Underground in a heroic moment.
However, not only did Cid manage to survive this explosion and avoid falling into the lava, but he also managed to escape to the surface and recuperate from his injuries. This is a pretty odd moment, especially sinceFinal Fantasy 4has shown that the game has no problems doing away with party members for good!

Final Fantasy 16launches on June 13, 2025, or PS5.
