Andrew Garfield is one of the most recognizable A-list actors working today in Hollywood, a fact certainly made true by his appearance as Peter Parker in Sony’s short-livedAmazing Spider-Manfranchise. Many fans want to see him return to play the web-slinger in a new film, which makes his rumored role in the upcoming MCU filmSpider-Man: No Way Homeall the more exciting. But this early from release, Garfield cannot say whether or not he appears in the film, and he understands exactly how frustrating that can be for fans of the Spider-Man movies.

Garfield starred in Sony Pictures' origin story reboot of theirSpider-Manfranchise,The Amazing Spider-Man, where Peter Parker faced off against Rhys Ifans’s The Lizard, andThe Amazing Spider-Man 2, where he investigated the death of his parents and fought against Jamie Foxx’s Electro. Sony Pictures had been planning a film based on The Sinister Six, but that project and others based within theAmazingfranchise were likely shelved in favor of making films based on the MCU version of Spider-Manplayed by Tom Holland. Sony Pictures is also creating a new universe of Marvel characters (including Venom and Morbius) that has a much looser connection toSpider-Man.

In an interview with Variety, the topic turned to Garfield’sspeculated involvement inSpider-Man: No Way Homeand the actor explained that while he knew where fans were coming from, he was not in a position to say anything about whether or not his version of Spider-Man would appear in the film. “It’s important for me to say on the record that this is not something I’m aware I am involved in,” he said during the interview. “But I know I’m not going to be able to say anything that will convince anyone that I don’t know what’s happening. No matter what I say, I’m f***ed. It’s either going to be really disappointing for people or it’s going to be really exciting.”

The announcement precedes confirmation, both by news about the film and bythe recentSpider-Man: No Way Hometrailer, that the film’s plot will showcase Spider-Man teaming up with Doctor Strange to combat problems stemming from threats posed by the multiverse. The preview also confirmed that Alfred Molina’s Dr. Octavius and Jamie Foxx’s Electro will both appear as villains despite them having appeared previously in the Sam RaimiSpider-ManandAmazing Spider-Manfranchises, respectively. Besides an alternate Alex Jones-adjacent version of J.K. Simmons' J. Jonah Jameson, no other characters or actors from pastSpider-Manfranchises have been confirmed to appear in the film at this time.

Fans will have to continue being patient to see whether or not Tobey Maguire or Garfield will appear in the film. In the meantime, Garfield fans can see him in the upcoming biopicThe Eyes of Tammy Fayeand the NetflixLin-Manuel Miranda musicalTick, Tick… Boom!, while Sony will releaseVenom: Let There Be Carnagein between now and the next MCUSpider-Manfilm.
