Nintendo’sAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsreached its first anniversary last month, and there are plenty of active players even if the game isn’t quite as big of a phenomenon as it was in March 2020. There are still updates planned, with Nintendo highlighting thereturn ofNew Horizons' cherry blossom trees in April 2021amid Bunny Day celebrations. As players continue to log in, they will also use the game’s creative systems to their advantage, with one fan recreating the intro fromSuper Smash Bros.on the Nintendo 64.

Thanks to custom outfits, island renovation, and sometimes clever editing tricks outside of the game,Animal Crossing: New Horizonsplayers have made all kinds of references to video games and other pop culture staples over the last year. One stand-out example in recent memory is aDisney’sHerculessong recreated inNew Horizons, and the take onSuper Smash Bros.uploaded by YouTuber Great-Bit Arcade on March 25 is similarly notable for the extra effort put in.

The intro for the originalSmash Bros.game starts with Master Hand creating a mock battlefield using Nintendo toys and household items on a desk, and the ingenuity of Great-Bit Arcade’s version shows itself right away as Master Hand is replaced by anAnimal Crossingvillager’s ball-shaped one. It goes through every scene with custom character outfits to represent all butMario and Luigi, who had official gear added toNew Horizonslast month, and most of its settings are built in-game.

With the introductory scenes toSuper Smash Bros. 64,Melee, andBrawlbeing as iconic as they are to many fans of the fighting game franchise, it makes sense someone would want to try translating them intoAnimal Crossing. Individual fans are not the only ones to have taken onAnimal Crossingamid its surge of popularity.
