It’s becoming more and more common to see video game franchises get official cookbooks, sometimes adapting real-world foods into recipes befitting a game’s culture, planets, and so forth.Five Nights at Freddy’s, God of War, andStardew Valleyare just some of the latest cookbooks, and a newcomer in this arena isApex Legends. From Simon and Schuster, theApex Legendsofficial cookbook retails at $24.99, features 170 or so pages of recipes, and is available now.
While the gameplay ofApex Legendsfocuses on the Apex Games, there is a wider universe around it. As a result, the many recipes are derived from the variousplanets in theApex Legendsuniverseand the cultures that inspired them, as well as some personal favorites of the characters. AnApex Legendscookbook wouldn’t be complete without Mirage’s pork chops after all, and fans can expect that and much more within its pages.

Apex Legends' Intro, Commentary, and Outro Are The Winning Recipe
While a cookbook’s domineering feature is of course the recipes within, it should be noted that it’s a pleasant read beyond that. Every section, every recipe, and the intro and outros are written from the perspective of Pathfinder and Mirage, which creates quite a few chuckle-worthy elements. There’s an entire story to how Pathfinder stumbled upon making a cookbook, how he’s been constantly fired, and howApex Legends' Syndicate (including a mention ofKuben Blisk) is paying Pathfinder and Mirage in exposure, which the latter objects to.
The book also references basicallyeveryApex Legendscharacter minus Ballisticin some way, sometimes revealing interesting little lore bits. Nothing in the book is necessarily revolutionary, but it’s still a nice addition to the larger canon. For example, while many may assume Wraith prefers a harder alcohol, it turns out her favorite drink is an Appletini. Meanwhile, the book also fleshes out some details and menus for in-universe restaurants, including Chickenbique. Not only is that a simple portmanteau of Chicken and Mozambique, but it’s hard not to see the description of it in the text as anything but a KFC reference.

Apex Legends Recipes and Contents Breakdown
When it comes to the recipes themselves, they are well-written and easy to follow—so much so that even Pathfinder would probably do fine with them in the kitchen. There are a few exceptions, but most recipes are easily confined to one page of instructions and a page for the image. Readers are provided with a complete ingredients list (sometimes with inserts for recommended substitutes or a joke or two shaped like a substitution), preparation instructions, any necessary kitchen equipment, how many servings the recipe yields, cook time, and a difficulty indicator. The latter is stylized afterApex Legends' ranked systemso a bronze recipe is easy to put together and the most difficult is Platinum. The difficulties are organized as follows:
The vast majority of this gaming cookbook falls in the Silver category, indicating generally how simple most of the recipes are. It should be noted that there are only two Platinum-rankedApex Legendsrecipes in the book, those being Loba’s Rolls and the latter beingNewcastle’s Red Velvet Cake. The former is sushi rolls, and the latter is obviously an entire cake from essentially scratch. Overall though, the readability and instructions are top-notch, simplifying even its most convoluted recipes into something that can fit on one page (generally speaking).

As an indication of what the book contains, it opens with a selection of breakfast foods and continues with a thorough selection of recipes:
