Dungeon Fighter Onlineis a massively popular MMO that boasts over 700 million registered users. Taking a unique approach to the MMO genre,Dungeon Fighter Onlineis a 2D side-scrolling fighting game. It was developed by Neople and initially released in Korea in August of 2005. From there, it spread to Japan, China, Taiwan, and finally North America in 2010. The PC game alone has grossed over $15 billion since its inception and has become one of the highest-grossing IPs of all time. In addition to the game, which isfree to play on Steamor through a standalone client,Dungeon Fighter Onlinehas spawned a manga and anime.
Many people will likely recognize Arc System Works for their work in the 2D fighting arena. They have served as developers and publishers behind several of the genre’s biggest series, includingGuilty GearandBlazBlue.Founded in 1988, Arc System Works has become one of the more well-known names in the fighting market space and has also taken on projects likePersona 4 ArenaandDragon Ball Fighter Z.
The trailer shows off amazing 3D animation set in a 2.5D fighting style, which could be compared toCapcom’s work withStreet Fighter 4.There are five characters showcased including the Berserker, Inquisitor, Striker, Grappler, and Ranger. The trailer’s description promises additional fighters once the game is released. The action is flashy and intense. Though only one stage is shown, the background is colorful and full of life, much like the characters occupying it.
Arc System Works is known formaking more technical fighting games. If this trend follows forDNF Duelit may not appeal to a broader audience. That said, the initialDungeon Fighter Onlineultimately developed appeal to a mass market. So, who knows, this may be just the title to breathe life back into the stagnating fighting genre. Or, it could be a title that serves the needs of a dedicated few. Either way, what little has been shown has been largely praised and looks amazing.
