Fans ofAssassin’s Creedhave been waiting a long time forAssassin’s Creed Valhalla. For those long-term fans, the reveal of thePS5 release date ofValhallasignals the end of the road in sight.
As part of theAssassin’s Creeduniverse, a few things are safe to assume aboutAssassin’s Creed Valhalla. For one, it’s almost certain that the conflict between the Assassins and Templars will be central. Some powerful artifacts are sure to show up, tying into the overall mystery. There will almost certainly be ship segments, as there have been sinceBlack Flag. And, in an entirely new gameplay type, there will be flyting (poetry fighting).

Some parts ofValhalla’s story are already known, as are parts of the map. Players have known for a while that England is a part of the game, but not its significance. This changed with the release of a new trailer highlighting the game’s story.Valhallafollows Eivor, the main character, but also centers on their brother, Sigurd. Sigurd dreams of invading and conquering land in England to establish a prosperous home for his people. This is why English locations likeSherwood Forestare important. They are more than just raiding locations: they are potential sites for a new kingdom.
Other important story points revealed included how Sigurd’s wife helps plan the invasions. Some of the opposing kingdoms and clans of England were also revealed. Obviously the kings of England will not simply make way, and Eivor and their people will have to fight. It looks like this will lead to large scale conflicts between Nordic and English forces, so army management might be part of the game. If players can design their own coat of arms, there’s a chance that they could even make banners of theAssassin’s Creed Sisterhood symbol, since it was added to the game.
One slightly strange aspect of the trailer is the fact that male Eivor is its centerpiece throughout. Eivor’s gender is chosen by the player. This means that, presumably, the gender of Eivor doesn’t matter too much in the game. Still, it would have been nice to see female Eivor in a couple scenes, just to see how the scenes change (if at all) with her there. At least this time,what happened to Aya inAssassin’s Creed Originsprobably won’t happen again, since female Eivor can’t really be cut from the game as the main character.
The last interesting story element introduced in the trailer was a figure who is very clearly an assassin. They seem to be Eivor’s mentor in assassination, which raises the question of how Eivor will fit in with the rest of the assassin organization. Reasons forwhy assassins and templars hate each other are well established, but Eivor will need a personal reason for players to get invested.
Assassin’s Creed Valhallareleases on November 10th for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, with a PS5 version launching November 12.
