Last year, Square Enix and Platinum Games announced that they were working together on a new game calledBabylon’s Fall. Since then, however, zero mention has been made of its existence, leaving people to wonder if we would ever hear from it again. Well, now we have, as the game finally reemerged duringSony’s State of Play presentationthis morning, giving us our first real look at the game in action.

When it wasrevealed at E3 2018,Babylon’s Fallwas teased with a cinematic trailerthat focused on the lore of the new IP’s world. It detailed a long and somber history of war and the wrath of gods following the discovery of a power called the Oversoul, as well as the role those called Nomads (likely the player characters) will play in fighting back for humanity.

While the trailer was good for establishing a moody premise that wouldn’t feel out of place in a From Software title, it failed to give folks much of an idea for howBabylon’s Fallwill actually play. And givenBabylon’s Fall’s absence throughout most of 2019, that has been one of the biggest questions on Platinum fans’ minds. But if the footage from today’s State of Play trailer is any indication, it will play very much like what fans have come to expect from a Platinum game.

LikeBayonetta,Nier: Automata, and, most recently,Astral Chainbefore it, gameplay appears to center around lightning-fast and very stylized combat. For most of the trailer, we are treated to shots of the player character chaining combos with the aid of a regular sword, spectral blades that appear out of thin air, and a spectral chain that lets them instantly close the distance between them and an enemy. The trailer also suggests players will be able to use the chain to steal enemies’ weapons and use those against them, as evidenced in the final moment in the trailer where the player character knocks the colossal sword out of a giant boss’ hand, grabs it with the chain, and swings it towards them.

Unfortunately, that’s all we have to go off of for now, but this time, though, Square Enix and Platinum gave fans an ETA for when they’ll be able to find out more, as the trailer ends with a quick message saying more information will be revealed sometime next summer. Now they only have to worry about when they’llfinally hear aboutBayonetta 3.
