It’s hard to believe people are still making mods for classicDoom, but a new one has just been released which totally converts the iconic FPS into aBatmangame, allowing players to run amok as the Caped Crusader in some of Gotham’s most notable locations. Known for being one of the most influential first-person shooters in history, not to mentionpioneering online multiplayer gaming, id Software’s 1993 release continues to be a source of inspiration to this day, especially in the modding community.
WithDoom’s co-creator John Romero working on new mapshimself, nearly 30 years after the game came out, there is still so much potential with the franchise, not only when it comes to mods but in the many ways the classic FPS has been ported. There have been some wild and wacky devices that have managed to run the originalDoom— such as treadmills, smartwatches, and even a John Deere tractor — that it seems as though the retro shooter is going to remain a part of gaming culture forever.

Going back to modifications, this latest one is not just a simple mod, but fully convertsDoom 2into aBatmantitle, complete with first-person perspective. Spotted by DSO Gaming, “Rogue City,” created by Team RayCast, turns id Software’s mid-90’s game into Gotham City, where The Dark Knight will take on some of the comic franchise’s most famous villains and bosses. The mod features eight “large levels” all with that familiarBatmanaesthetic. And yes, it also has the Batmobile, which is fully driveable. The mod is now available to download, but it’s specifically built for GZDoom, so players will need to have that installed.
There are some pretty incredibletotal conversion mods forDoomout there, turning the old school FPS into something completely different. It gives some indication of just how much of an impact the series continues to have on gaming. Not many releases can say they are still an important part of the community nearly three decades later. But then again, many releases didn’t lay the groundwork for what would be one of the most popular video game genres of all time.
Even today,Doomis a classic game that holds up. Sure, it’s aged significantly over the years and the industry itself has grown. But it cannot be overstated just how much of a game-changer id Software was with some of its earlier titles, and no doubt fans will keep modding the influential shooter for many more years.
Doom 2was released in 1994 and is available on multiple platforms.
