Summary
In a game ofCivilization 6, it is rather common to encounter one or two civilizations that will be an unfriendly neighbor due to their warmongering aspirations. Sometimes, these civilizations will have unique abilities or units that will aid their bloodthirsty ways to conquer the world, making it crucial for a player to have the best defensive options.
Therefore, it can be beneficial for players with a passive playstyle to lead a civilization specializing in defensive gameplay as well. Some of these civilizations receive defensive bonuses while fighting in their territories, or can build defensive buildings quickly and with ease compared to other civilizations.

7Australian
The Specialist Against Backstabbing Enemies
Political maneuvering and diplomatic incidents are a common sight inCivilization 6, which includes having a close ally backstabbing by declaring a surprise war when the player is at their most vulnerable. By playing as an Australian, a Surprise War can be handled easily as the player will receive double production in all cities after being declared war on.
The bonus production can be easily used toproduce powerful military unitsor build walls to strengthen the cities while preparing for an ample counterattack. Moreover, Australia’s special unit, Digger, which replaces the Infantry, is powerful enough to push the invaders back.

6Chinese
Hold Off Warmongers With The Great Walls
A tricky terrain condition can sometimes deter an invasion, such as having a chokepoint that limits the number of invading units to pour in and take all the player’s cities. By playing as Chinese, chokepoints can be reinforced further by constructing thepowerful, unique improvement, the Great Wall.
Great Wall provides powerful bonuses for the units occupying it, making them able to attack the same turn and retain fortifications after combat. By employing powerful defensive units in these Great Walls, Chinese players can ensure their border is well-defended.

5Gallic
Potential Triple Ranged Strike From Cities In A Turn
To hold off against invasions from warmongering civilizations, especially bydangerous AI players, a player can try to build Encampments as it will grant them the option of having two Ranged Strikes, provided the city also has a wall built. As Gallic, the player can have three Ranged Strikes at one turn thanks to the unique district, Oppidum.
The Oppidum provides another layer of Outer Defense and Ranged Strike capability provided that the city also has Walls built. If the city has an Encampment built as well, the player easily wipes out enemy units with three Ranged Strikes capability without sacrificing any units in the process.

4Canadian
Surprise War No Longer Becomes A Problem
Getting a Surprise War out of nowhere while having limited military units and defensive buildings can sometimes mean a game over inCivilization 6, especially when the attacking civilization has a sizable lead in both units and technology, supported also by thelocal warmongering city-states.
While playing as the Canadians, the problem vanishes as they cannot be attacked out of nowhere by a Surprise War, with hostile civilizations needing to Denounce first and wait 5 turns before declaring war. This gives the player enough opportunity to prepare for the impending war by building military units and defensive buildings such as walls.

3Vietnamese
Use Terrain Preference To Defensive Advantage
Units from other civilizations will have a hard time when trying to invade Vietnamese territory since they have the Rainforest-Wood starting bonuses, and a unique ability to have strong bonuses for units inside these treacherous tiles, including the Marshes. Due to these advantages, a player of Vietnamese civilization will be able to utilize natural protection through the terrain.
Moreover, these bonuses are doubled when inside Vietnamese territory, making the civilization top tier to turtle against hostile civilizations and in multiplayer games full of opportunists.

Coupled with the fact that the Georgians will acquire Faith after killing a unit, the civilization will be able to turtle while trying towin a Religious Victorywith ease, as long as the other civilizations are not well-equipped to face the danger that the Georgians pose.
