Fans and analysts alike have speculated that Bungie will releaseDestiny 3in 2020, perhaps alongside the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles. However, it appears as though Bungie is not ready to move on fromDestiny 2just yet. The Destiny 2020 Director’s Cut post from Bungie suggests that the studio will be focused onDestiny 2throughout 2020 and even going into next year, so fans shouldn’t expect to seeDestiny 3until 2021 at the earliest.
The Destiny 2020 Director’s Cut post discusses Bungie’s goals forDestiny 2this year. In the post, the development team states that it will focus on “aspiration” throughout 2020 and into 2021. This means that the team will work on adding content toDestiny 2that aims to make the player feel “hope or ambition of achieving something,” as Bungie feels “aspiration” is the driving force behind why people continue to playDestiny 2.

Part of the way that Bungie is hoping to bring aspiration back toDestiny 2is through thereturn of the Trials of Osiris. Like past iterations of the game mode, the Trials of Osiris will allowDestiny 2players to unlock special rewards. This includes Year 1 Trials of Osiris armor along with new rewards that players will be able to unlock by participating in the Trials.
The Trials of Osiris isn’t the only thing Bungie has up its sleeve when it comes to keepingDestiny 2fans engaged with the game throughout 2020. However, someDestinyfans may have had their fill ofDestiny 2and its seasonal event structure. Those ready to move on toDestiny 3shouldn’t expect the game to come this year, but perhaps they will luck out in 2021. However, we should note that there’s also a distinct possibility thatDestiny 3won’t come until 2022.
That’s because ofBungie’s five-year plan forDestiny 2. While it’s possible Bungie will divert from this vision, if it doesn’t, that would mean thatDestiny 3wouldn’t launch until 2022.
IfDestiny 3is truly that far off, thenDestiny 2fans can count onBungiereleasing a lot of new content for the game between now and then. Fans should be able to expect expansions on the level of Shadowkeep every once in awhile, in addition to the seasonal events that the studio has been releasing. Whether or not this content will be enough to create the “aspiration” that Bungie is hoping for remains to be seen, however.
