Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warhas seen its fair share of both positive responses and harsh criticisms, with one recent discovery sparking controversy. A recent mention of reserves was found in the code for the game, worrying fans thatCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warwould be adopting the frustrating Supply Drop lootbox system fromBlack Ops 4. Players can rest easy, though, as Treyarch has confirmed that this will not be happening.
While Activision and Treyarch have been dodging theBlack Ops Cold Warskill-based matchmakingdiscussion entirely, both the publisher and developer were quick to deny the Supply Drop rumor. Within a reddit post compiled by user ElDubYouLose, mentions within the code regarding crates and reserve bundles were discovered. These systems were highly controversial throughout the entirety ofBlack Ops 4’s life cycle, with Treyarch not changing the way that they worked until around the release ofModern Warfare.

For those who did not playBlack Ops 4or a few of theCoDgames before it, additional weapons were thrown into the supply drops and were randomly unlocked through extensive grinding or the use of real money. Many players found this setup unfair, voicing their concerns until the system was replaced with a battle pass inModern Warfare. While it has been known for some time thatBlack Ops Cold Warwill have a battle pass, sharing it withWarzonelikeModern Warfare, there has been some fear among fans that Supply Drops will still be coming to the game as well.
While this discovery made by ElDubYouLose reignited that controversy, Treyarch and Activision shut down the rumors almost instantly. In the comments of the post, Treyarch’s community manager FoxhoundFPS responded to the concerns, stating that the entire issue is a “bug where placeholder UI fromBlack Ops 4was leftover in a Message of the Day template.” This response will certainly be a relief for the many players who hated the supply drop system, and it is not the first time FoxhoundFPS has quelled the fears of fans. After the Alpha, theTreyarch community manager responded to tank concernsregarding the vehicle’s power level.
Activision reiterated FoxhoundFPS’s statement in a post of their own, stating that “this was an error on our part and has been updated” before clarifying that theBlack Ops Cold WarBattle Pass system will be the same as it is inModern Warfare. With official confirmation from both Treyarch and Activision, fans can go back tofinding Nuketown easter eggsinstead of worrying about the return of the dreaded supply drop system.
The continued removal of supply drops shows thatActivision and Treyarch are listening to feedback from fans, with fan requested weapon stats and FOV sliders on console only adding to that sentiment. Whether the developers give in to fans asking for changes to skill-based matchmaking, on the other hand, remains to be seen.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warwill be available November 13th on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
