The player count forModern Warfare 2andWarzone 2has dropped dramatically since release day.Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2came out in October 2022, withWarzone 2releasing in November alongside the Season 1 update.
Both games appeared to be massive success stories at launch, asModern Warfare 2surpassed $800 million in its opening weekend, withWarzone 2exceeding 25 million playerswithin five days of its release. However, it seems like the user base for these games has gone down significantly since release, and new data confirms that it recently dropped to a record low point.

As reported by CharlieIntel,Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2andWarzone 2peaked at under 90k players on Steam, making it the largest decrease since both games launched. The given post is from March 28, with the peak concurrent player count listed as 87,621. At the time of this writing, there are 73,873users playingModern Warfare 2andWarzone 2on Steam, but the 24-hour peak has reduced further to 86,043. It’ll be interesting to see how this number changes in the coming weeks, but it’ll probably not reach anywhere close to the all-time peak of 488,897.
CharlieIntel also makes note of the daily peak number being much lower than competitorsDestiny 2andApex Legends, as they have a 24-hour peak concurrent count of 141,409 and 572,373 gamers respectively. Bungie launched anew expansion forDestiny 2calledLightfallin February, which may have contributed to its higher number.
Players in the comments section of the post share several reasons for this number being relatively low, with many blaming the SBMM system implemented in theseCall of Dutytitles. Fans also point to how Activision and Infinity Ward refused to add some highly-requested features like the classicCall of Dutymini-map, with a lot of complaints being thrown around about other aspects of the game. It appears that some users alsodislike the wayModern Warfare 2handles playlists, as the popular Shipment 24/7 playlist is regularly removed from the game.
Coming toWarzone 2, a few users share complaints about limited-time game modes and the monetization practices followed by Activision, with one fan claiming that it never had the charm of the originalWarzone. Overall, it looks likeModern Warfare 2andWarzone 2players have a lot of reasonsfor disliking the current state of the games.
