Call of Duty: Modern Warfarehas been a resurgence for theCall of Dutybrand. Activision recently confirmed thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfaresales are up by a “double-digit percentage” and microtransaction sales are increasing in parallel. It’s understandable then that Activision sees additional value in theModern Warfareseries, and the company has now indicated that it’s working on spin-offs.
As reported by SeekingAlpha, Activision COO and President Coddy Johnson confirmed plans forModern Warfarespin-offs in a recent quarterly financial call. According to Johnson, theCall of Dutyfranchise “has never been better positioned for growth,” andActivisionplans to capitalize while things are going well. Johnson says that “entirely new experiences within theModern Warfareuniverse” are coming soon.

Johnson doesn’t elaborate on Activision’splans forModern Warfare, of course. These “new experiences” will be announced as Activision and its respective studios are ready to bring them to the public.
The one poorly kept secret rumored to be in development is aCall of Duty: Modern Warfarebattle royale title, developed by Raven Software. Early rumors indicated that it would be a 200-player battle royale and that it would launch in late January, either inModern Warfareitself or as a standalone release. That obviously didn’t happen, but fans are still hoping for news about the battle royale soon. WithModern WarfareSeason 2 starting soon, however, another announcement in the relatively near future doesn’t seem likely.
As for what other spin-offs Activision might be planning, it’s a mystery. If Johnson had said specifically that Activision was working on a single “new experience,” rather than use the plural, that would be plainly understood. Since he did refer to multiple experiences,Call of Dutyfanscan’t help but wonder what else might be in the works. It’s especially surprising, since there’s supposed to be a brand newCall of Dutygame released later this year. Any otherModern Warfarespin-offs would have to be released in the time between.
For now, Activision is focused onCall of Duty: Modern Warfareand its upcoming Season 2 release, as well as thenewCall of Dutygame planned for late 2020. It very much sounds like the time between now and late 2020 will be filled with moreModern Warfarecontent. That may or may not include the rumoredModern Warfarebattle royale, which may or may not be released as a standalone or even free-to-play game. There’s a lot to look forward to forCall of Dutyfans, clearly.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfareis available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
