To say the history between theDestiny 2community and the game’s competitive co-operative mode, Gambit, is a complex one would be an understatement. The mode is a regular source of criticism due to a combination of balancing issues and, for some players, feeling stale given the lack of major gameplay changes sinceSeason of the Drifter. Bungie is aware of this and is looking to inject some fresh ideas into Gambit, starting with a new twist on invading due to the debuting Gambit Labs.
Gambit was first introduced toDestiny 2in 2018’sForsakenexpansion and was touted as the expansion’s marquee new PvPvE mode where two teams of Guardians race to bank motes, defeat mini-bosses, and slow down the other team via blockers and invading players. The mode was the centerpiece of the aforementioned Season of the Drifter, which introduced Gambit Prime as a faster, single-round option before it ultimately replaced the original three-round Gambit. The mode has undergone some smaller changes since then to blockers, boss rounds, and heavy ammo spawns, but it has not had a substantial change.

In the latest This Week at Bungie, the studio outlined what the first week ofGambit Labsand the initial twist, invasion swap, will look like inside of normal and freelance Gambit. Invasion swap, as the name implies, will see the opposing team be given the option to invade when a player’s team banks 25 and 75 motes as opposed to normal matches where the banking team can invade when hitting 25 and 75 motes. The studio says it hopes to see players test out some new strategies as they have to be more mindful of their mote count and available invasions.
Bungie is also trying to give players extra incentive to test out the first Gambit Labs by making it a double reputation week. If any players need to earnSeason of the Risen’s ritual shotgun, Reckless Endangerment, or the Gambit-specific skin for it, the next reset will be the time to jump into Gambit.
As mentioned above, Gambit has not been the most popular activity forDestiny 2players for some time as Bungie continues trying to make it more appealing. Gambit Labs could be a helpful first step in doing so, given how helpful lab modes were inside of Crucible. Team Scorched is just one example of this, as the scorch cannon-only mode was born insideCrucible Labsbefore it was added to the weekly mode rotation. Whether this ends up being as successful inside Gambit, though, remains to be seen.
