With theBeyond Lightexpansion, Bungie has started “vaulting” some content inDestiny 2. The general idea is that Bungie files some unpopularDestiny 2content away in the Destiny Content Vault to make room for fresh experiences, all the while keeping the game’s file size under control. However, it seems that the Destiny Content Vault may also one day lay claim to content that is fairly popular with fans of the MMO shooter.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Bungie general manager Justin Truman confirmed that, at some point,Destiny 2will be vaulting theForsakenexpansion content.Forsakenis a notable expansion forDestiny 2, as it features thedeath of Cayde-6 at the hands of Uldren Sov. According to Truman,Destiny 2will vault theForsakencontent because it could be confusing for new players. In some of the available storylines, Uldren Sov is presented as a villain, but in the ongoing Season of the Chosen storyline, he is presented as a hero.

Of course, there would be ways for Bungie to ensure that this isn’t confusing for new players. One obvious method would be to have them play through the story content in order instead of letting them access it all at once. Alternatively, Bungie could make the expansion story order clear to the player when they start up the game. However, it seems that it would rather use theDestiny Content Vaultinstead.
Another reason whyForsakencontentwill eventually be put in the Destiny Content Vault is due to the game’s file size. Bungie would likeDestiny 2stay roughly around the same file size that it is currently. So when a new destination is added to the game,Destiny 2fans can expect an older destination that isn’t getting as much foot-traffic from players to be pulled from the game.
While this method will no doubt be appreciated byDestiny 2fans who don’t want the game taking up an excessive amount of space on their hard drives, others will be disappointed that this content is going away. It may even have the opposite effect that Bungie intends and keep new players from jumping into the game. After all, they already can’t experience theRed War storylinefrom the baseDestiny 2game, and so it will be impossible for new players to experience the story properly or get invested in the characters the same way as those who have been with it since the start.
There are certainly pros and cons to the Destiny Content Vault, and it’s something that Bungie will have to experiment with to find a balance that pleases both old fans and newcomers. Anyone that has yet to play through theForsakencontent inDestiny 2might want to make it a point to do so while they still can, though it should be noted content could always come backoutof the Destiny Content Vault as well. Sovaulted destinations like Mars, Titan, Io, and others could eventually return to the game someday.
