After an Xbox Games Showcase filled with games announcements, the CEO of Xbox Game Studios, Phil Spencer, revealed that Microsoft is not interested in the development of anXbox Series XPro console. It seems the next generation of Microsoft hardware will not be announced any time soon, with the company being happy with the performances of theXbox Series Xand its slightly less-powerful version, the Xbox Series S.
Unlike its main competitors Sony and Nintendo, Microsoft doesn’t support one but two consoles this generation. Both the Xbox Series X and Series S were released in November 2020, offering players the choice between a high-end console running games at 4K resolution with 60 FPS, or a lower-end version that does not include an optical drive but is cheaper than its advanced counterpart. The Xbox Series X and S managed to compete with the popular PlayStation 5, letting players choose between two consoles depending on their needs and allowing them todiscover games through the Xbox Game Pass subscription service.

Following the Xbox Games Showcase, Phil Spencer revealed in an interview with Bloomberg that Microsoft is not planning on an Xbox Series X Pro console. Spencer declared that the feedback Microsoft received from players did not indicate a need for an upgraded version of the Xbox Series X, with both the company and players being happy with the current state of Xbox hardware. Spencer also mentioned that players’ feedback is at the core of Xbox’s strategy, and this is why the company never engaged in NFTs or blockchain gaming, unlike developers such asSquare Enix and its upcomingSymbiogenesis.
During the Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft announced anew version of the Xbox Series Swith 1 TB of storage against the default 500 GB of the original console. This storage upgrade comes at a price, with this new Xbox Series S Carbon Black console being listed at $349.99 as opposed to the $299.99 price tag of the original Xbox Series S. Microsoft also addressed the shortage affecting the Xbox Series X, assuring players that it has “significantly increased” supplies.
While Microsoft does not seem ready to develop an Xbox Series X Pro console, its competitorSony is reportedly shipping PlayStation 5 Pro dev kits to first-party developers. Sony hasn’t yet revealed any official information regarding this upgraded version of its console, but players can expect more news about the PS5 Pro in the upcoming months as developers begin working with this new enhanced console that could improve ray tracing performances according to patents published by the company.
