2022 is shaping up to be a big year for gaming, with several major AAA and indie titles set to release this year. In fact, the early year is busier than normal with several of themost anticipated games of 2022set to release in February and March. Topping that list for many isElden Ring, which is set to release in February.
Elden Ringwill likely remain incredibly mysterious heading into its launch; its developer, FromSoftware, is so renowned that no marketing would still see the game sell like hotcakes. However, it is getting some marketing ahead of release and fans are learning more about why Hidetaka Miyazaki won’t play Elden Ring, thefirst Elden Lord Godfrey, horse combat, and more.

Most of this has come via an interview with Edge Magazine, which features the aforementioned Godfrey on the cover. In this same interview, Miyazaki also discussed some of the game’s influences, which included the belovedLord of the Ringsstories. Miyazaki does explain that “it’s difficult to give any one single inspiration that had a major impact,” but “there have been a lot of different works that influenced the creative process in various ways.” Namely, these includeThe Lord of the Rings, The Eternal Championnovel series by Michael Moorcock, tabletop RPGs likeRunequest, and more.
Miyazaki doesn’t dive too deeply into how specifically these works influencedElden Ring– though with the focus on a specific Ring,The Lord of the Ringsmight seem obvious—for fans of any of these, it’s still a good sign. It’s because they didn’t have a real singular focus, as Miyazaki explain that there were a lot of “motifs and themes that I was able to pick from these various works that had an effect on thedevelopment of Elden Ring.”
Fans will just have to wait and see what how these influences and inspirations come into play, but perhaps the best part is thatElden Ringreleases at the end of next month. It’s still a slight wait, but truth is,Elden Ring’s first real showcase was once a fable of sorts in the gaming industry. It was silent for so long that many even jokingly considered it a shared pipe dream that didn’t really exist, butElden Ring’s release date is now known and fans will be diving into their quest to become the Elden Lord before long.
Elden Ringreleases February 25 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
