Even though Marvel comics as well as theMCUdraw inspiration from the real world, it would be a mistake to think that they’re one hundred percent accurate in their portrayals of it. A lot of the superheroes reside in places that exist and are well familiar to Marvel fans, such asSpider-Manin Queens andCaptain Americain Brooklyn.

However, theMCUand the comics also create places that make Marvel’s world geographically different from the real one. In most cases, the differences are brand new countries that don’t exist in the real world. Each of them then played a major part in the comics, and some of them have appeared in the MCU as well.

8Latveria

Marvel comics like to create fictional European countries. One of the most famous ones is Latveria, ruled by Doctor Doom. Latveria is a small country that borders Hungary, Romania, and Serbia. As all people who studied geography will know, there’s no such place in Europe.

Despite Doctor Doom’s reputation, he makes sure his country is as safe as it can be. Multiple people (such as the Fantastic Four) have tried to take the rule of Latveria from Doom, but sooner or later, he gets back to power and resumes control over his country.

7The Savage Land

The Savage Land is full of rich flora and fauna but it’s not the safest place to go to despite its beauty. It would also stand out in the real world if it was located in the same place where it is in the comics - which is in Antarctica!

Despite the local cold climate, the Savage Land flourishes, as it was created artificially by the alien Nuwali. Another important difference from the real world is that the Savage Land is home to dinosaurs and as such, it’s not safe to go there even for superheroes.

6The Monster Island

Just like the Savage Land, the Monster Island also speaks for itself. Located near Japan, the island is inhabited by huge creatures who keep fighting each other. That doesn’t mean nobody can live there, however.

The ruler of the island is Moleman, one of Fantastic Four’s oldest villains. He has figured out a way how to control the monsters and so the island serves him as his home. Unsurprisingly, there are no monster-filled islands in the world.

5Sokovia

Similar to Latveria, Sokovia is another fictional country set in Eastern Europe. It’s where Wanda and Pietro Maximoff are from, as witnessed from Wanda’s flashbacks inWandaVision.

The war-torn country suffered even more duringAvengers: Age of Ultron(2015) whenAvengers took on Ultron and his army. Sokovia’s capital city Novi Grad (also a completely fictional city, albeit one with a name inspired by other places) was destroyed during the battle with Ultron. And as all MCU fans will know, Sokovia’s destruction also led to the government passing the Accords, which subsequently led to a civil war between the Avengers.

4Wakanda

Unlike Sokovia, Wakanda is one of the richest countries in the world, if nottherichest one. It has the power to mask itself from the rest of the world, thereby hiding its true wealth and resources. It became as technologically powerful thanks to the fact that it’s the main source of vibranium (the super-strong metal Captain America’s shield is made of).

A portion ofBlack Panther(2018)revolves around the decision of whether it’s a good idea to open Wakanda to the world and show what it’s hiding. T’Challa eventually decides to do so. Wakanda is based in Africa, but unfortunately for all Black Panther fans, it’s a completely fictional country.

3Kamar-Taj

Without Kamar-Taj, there’d be no Stephen Strange as Sorcerer Supreme. But all fans who would like to study the mystic arts are in for a disappointment. Kamar-Taj is set in Nepal, but there’s no such place in the country.

Doctor Strange travels there to cure his hands after the car accident and ends up learning magic under the tutelage of the Ancient One. Even though Kamar-Taj only appeared in live-action inDoctor Strange(2016), its significance as a place of knowledge and power shouldn’t be underestimated.

2Sanctum Sanctorum

Even though Sanctum Sanctorum is based in a real city (New York, in Greenwich Village), it would be impossible to find it in the real world. OnceDoctor Strange leaves Nepal and Kamar-Taj, he returns to the USA and lives in the magical Sanctum Sanctorum.

It’s also where Loki and Thor visit him and where Doctor Strange performs the spell that’s supposed to erase the knowledge of Spider-Man’s identity. It fails and instead leads to a disaster. Of course, the New York City Sanctum Sanctorum isn’t the only one, as similar magical bases are in other major cities as well, specifically in London and in Hong Kong.

1Madripoor

One of the latest fictional geographical locations in the MCU is Madripoor. That’s where Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson travel inFalcon and the Winter Soldier.

Madripoor is a city-state in Singapore, full of dangerous people, and not the best place for tourists. Bucky and Sam also get in trouble and it’s only thanks to Baron Zemo’s and Sharon Carter’s help that they’re able to get out of there safely.
