Hideo Kojima’sDeath Strandinghas easily gone down as one of the more highly controversial games of the past decade. While some loved it and others hated it, it generated discussions about the nature of video games, why people play them, and facilitated lengthy discussions about whether the medium is truly an artform. Love it or hate it, it seemsPlayStation 4 owners unanimously flocked to stores to buyDeath Stranding, and through a new tease, many fans are wondering if Kojima is close to revealing when a whole new batch of players can do the same.

Posting on his Twitter account, the esteemed director showed off some gameplay fromDeath Strandingwith the cryptic caption of “Coming 2020.” Before long, the post was ablaze with fans assuming they were looking at the first PC footage coming from the game.

The footage, which shows Sam Porter Bridges traveling through trenches and running from a crashing plane, caps off with huge text reading 2020. Of course, Kojima has already confirmed that fans will be getting aPC version ofDeath Strandinglater this year, so the director’s tease surrounding something coming in 2020 almost directly aligns with the long-awaited port. However, some fans are speculating that the cryptic video might just have been a joke centering on a recent blockbuster release.

Kojima’s footage appears to be almost directly replicatingSam Mendes'1917;an academy-award winning film depicting the journey of two British soldiers in the First World War that debuted late last year. The crashing plane sequence in the teaser seems to be a direct reference to one of the film’s biggest set-pieces and the trenches Sam is journeying through appear to symbolize its war-torn setting. Kojima’s footage culminating with giant text spelling 2020 almost exactly mirrors the promotional material for the war movieas well, with the film’s trailer ending with the numbers1917transitioning onto the screen in a giant bold font.

Although many are claiming this was merely a joke on Kojima’s part, it seems more likely that the teaser is both alluding to the game’s PC debut while also paying homage to Sam Mendes' popular new film. As many will no doubt know,Kojima is a vocal supporter of cinema, and often uses Twitter and other outlets to express his love for recent movies. Perhaps the auteur simply wanted to make a trailer in a similar style to show his admiration for Mendes' vision while also highlighting the next big release coming from Kojima Productions. It seems fans won’t have to wait long to find out.

Death Strandingis out now on PlayStation 4 and is set to release on PC later this year.
