How to Start ‘The Way Home’

This side quest can be started by going to Legacy’s Landfall. Onboard one of the boats is two navigators. Talking to them will trigger a cutscene that starts this quest. The recommended level for this side quest is 32, and it requires the completion of the main story quest ‘Wings of the Ten’.

Fly to the Shipwreck

The gyrocompass needed by the navigators can be found in a shipwreck. The problem is that the waters are too rough, so swimming to the shipwreck is impossible. Players will need to use a Sunwingto fly to the island. Leave the settlement and summon a Sunwing to fly there.

Be cautious when landing on the island, as there are two Snapmaws roaming around. While it is possible to search the shipwreck with the machines still active, killing them makes it easier to search the area.

Search for the Gyrocompass

Approach what is left of the ship. As playersexamine the area with the Focus, Aloy will comment on how it appears to have been picked clean by machines. The quest will update and players will have search scrap piles on the island to look for the gyrocompass. There are only a couple of scrap piles on the island, so it won’t take players long to find it. The gyrocompass is not in great shape.

Take the Gyrocompass Back to Harriem and Kristia

Get back onto the Sunwing and fly back to Legacy’s Landfall where the two navigators are eagerly awaiting good news. Unfortunately, the gyrocompass is broken and cannot be used. But Harriem and Kristia come up with a back-up plan. There is an ancient shipwreck site where there might be parts that can be salvaged and used to repair the gyrocompass.

The next area to search is southwest of Legacy’s Landfall. Go throughthe ruins of San Franciscoto reach another shipwreck. Upon reaching the shoreline, call the Sunwing and fly above the area indicated by the waypoint.

Fly toward the large rusted metal structure sticking out of the water, and the quest will update. There will be two spots underwater that players will need to search to find the three batteries and the sensor unit needed to repair the gyrocompass.

Dive into the water and approach the antenna to search for the Sensor Unit. The Sensor Unit is not there, but there is an old recording on it. The sensor unit on this ship may be a dead end, but there are still batteries to search for. Use the Focus to find the Batteries. Upon successfully scanning a Battery, a waypoint will appear to indicate where it is.

Swim toward each location but watch out for the machines swimming around in the water. Once all batteries have been found, return to the surface and head toward the coordinates up north to reach another shipwreck.

Go to the Coordinates

Call the Sunwing and fly toward the coordinates to the north. By flying, it won’t take very long to reach the next area. Unfortunately, the shipwreck in this area is now home to a Dreadwing. Before players can investigate the ship for the sensor unit, they must landand kill the Dreadwing.

Once the Dreadwing is dead, walk along the ropes to reach the antenna. Fortunately, this ruined ship still has a sensor unit. With that, players will have all they need to repair the gyrocompass. Either fast travel or fly back to Harriem and Kristia.
