Updated June 21, 2025, by Gemma Johnson:There are numerous species of magical creatures you can catch and care for in Hogwarts Legacy. However, there is only so much space in your Vivariums, with a maximum beast species limit within each one. If you’ve caught a lot of beasts and different species, you might wonder how to increase your beast species limit in Hogwarts Legacy and how to get more beast space. While beast storage space in the game is somewhat limited regarding Vivarium upgrades and doesn’t necessarily tell you everything, there are ways you can get a bit more space if you’re struggling to home all of your creatures. This guide adds further information about increasing your beast species limit in Hogwarts Legacy and details the benefits of getting more Vivarium space.

How to Increase Vivarium Beast Species Limit in Hogwarts Legacy

While Vivariums inHogwarts Legacy’s Room of Requirementgive a lot of ground for your creatures to roam, unfortunately, there are some limitations when it comes to animal and species capacity. InHogwarts Legacy, although one Vivarium can hold as many as 12 animals, it can only house a maximum offour specieswithno way to increase the beast species limit of each individual Vivarium.

Therefore, if you have already caught more species than, for example, a Puffskein, Mooncalf, Fwooper, and Graphorn, you can only storeup to four different species in a single Vivarium,so you’ll have to choose which four beast species you want to include. If you try to store more species than the maximum number of four, you’ll need to make more space using other methods, as per the on-screen notification that appears if you try to add more, as below, which suggests selling them to free up space:

Fortunately, there is a solution beyond just selling creatures to make more space for different creatures. If the number of species you have found and want to tame is more than the space in your Vivarium, don’t worry, because there is one effective method you’re able to use to work around this obstacle. While you can’t expand your maximum Vivarium beast species limit within individual Vivariums, increase their individual overall animal capacity, or modify them further in terms of storage, you canunlock more Vivariumsinstead to get around this problem and store additional species.

In total, you’re able to unlock four Vivariumsin the Room of Requirement by progressing through variousmain and side quests inHogwarts Legacy. Doing so enables you to tame and store more kinds of beasts, expanding your beast species limit to a maximum of 16 species across all four Vivariums, which are known as theDefault Vivarium (Forest),Swamp,Coastal, andGrassland Meadow/Mountain Vivariums, as pictured below:

Fortunately, the requirements tounlock more Vivariums inHogwarts Legacyaren’t overly complicated, as you need to progress in the game and complete certain quests. Each Vivarium is unlocked after completing a related quest, which can be a main or side quest. The table below lists all the Vivariums you’re able to unlock inHogwarts Legacy, the specific quests you have to complete to unlock them, plus how much animal capacity and species limit each provides:

It can take time to unlockall of Hogwarts Legacy’s Vivarium biomes, but you might not find and tame all the species before unlocking the fourth Vivarium, which is the Mountain/Grassland Meadow Vivarium. If you find yourself in a situation where a new species you catch is much better than any of the ones you have in Vivarium, there are some ways to make room if you are happy to part with some of your creatures. Firstly, you can sell your animals at Brood and Peck, where you can purchase handy beast resources like Fwooper Fathers. Alternatively, you can release any animals you catch back into the wild from the Beast Inventory menu, which is irreversible.

Increasing your beast species limit and animal capacity by acquiring more Vivariums inHogwarts Legacycan have several benefits, in addition to being able to store more species at any one time. If you enjoy breeding animals in the game, it’s a handy way toearn money fast inHogwarts Legacy. More Vivariums means you have extra space to store, breed, and sell more animal species, which is a great way to accumulate more gold in the game.

For some players, one of the best ways to take advantage of this is to set aside a separate Vivarium for breeding and place three animals of four species in it, ensuring you include a male and a female of each species. Place a female and a male of the same species in a breeding pen and wait for the result. From a total of 13 species inHogwarts Legacy, it’s also important to note that the only species you cannot breed is the Phoenix because there is only one in the game as a one-of-a-kind, unique creature.
