Several years after its initial announcement,Project 007remains shrouded in mystery. It has been radio silence since developer IO Interactive released the initial teaser trailer, which showed off little more than some artwork and a logo. Bond has been notably absent from video games since 2012, so fans of the British spy will be eager to see his return sooner rather than later. WhenProject 007does eventually release, it will apparently be an origin story for the MI6 agent, so IO Interactive should present a version of Bond who is pretty far removed from the stealthy, charming 00 agent fans are accustomed to.
Bond’s foray into the world of video games over the years hasn’t always been a triumphant one. His library ranges from the dizzying heights of theN64’s belovedGoldeneye, one of the most influential FPS titles ever made, to less well-received titles007 RacingandTomorrow Never Dies. A new video game for the franchise is long overdue, even more so at a time when fans have been starved of any Bond content since 2021’sNo Time to Die, which marked Daniel Craig’s final outing in the famous tuxedo.
Project 007’s Bond Character Will Likely be Untested
Tackling Bond’s origin story is no easy task, given the aura and myth which surround the character. The closest an on-screen version of Bond has had to an origin story wasDaniel Craig’s first movie, 2006’sCasino Royale, which portrayed Bond achieving his promotion to 00 status, and earning his license to kill. While this isn’t an origin story in the traditional sense, given Bond was already a skilled spy working for the government during the movie’s opening segment, it does serve as a vehicle for him to transform into the suave, efficient killing machine fans are more used to seeing.
During this transformation, Craig conveys a grittier, less complete version of Bond, lacking the skills and composure of his older self, and the actor received praise for adding new layers to the character. In most, if not all, of his video game appearances so far,James Bond has displayed legendary driving skills, pinpoint marksmanship, and ruthless hand-to-hand fighting skills.
Stealth is a huge tool in his arsenal, and he is often able to infiltrate anywhere he needs to go without being detected. Given IO Interactive’s experience with theHitmanfranchise, a stealth-heavy title would certainly fit the developer’s M.O., but introducing a raw, untested Bond, not quite capable of elite-level stealth missions, would likely be a far more interesting take for players to engage with.
It Could be Time for a New Take on James Bond
With the Daniel Craig era over, anew James Bond actor is yet to be announced, but this could actually work inProject 007’s favor. This version of James Bond can be wholly original, not borrowing any actor’s likeness, allowing for better immersion in whichever world is created for the character. A younger Bond would have a different set of skills, maybe his fighting style is a little less refined, his aim not quite as good as his older counterpart, and his charm and wit are still being honed.
How some of this would translate to game mechanics remains to be seen, but nevertheless, it should certainly help to keep the whole experience feeling new and exciting.
There’s no indication of when fans should expect new information regardingProject 007, but as the season of gaming showcases is kicking off, many will be hoping for a better look at the upcoming project. IfIO Interactive is able to take elements ofHitman’s mechanicsand mix them with a fresh, innovative take on James Bond, fans should expect the newest video game in the franchise to be among the best yet.
