HBO has entered into early development on its upcoming sequel series to the highly popularGame of Thronesfranchise. The untitled project will star Kit Harington, reprising his role as the emblematic Jon Snow, in a series centered around the character that will take place after the events that transpired in the original series.
The crowd-pleasing fantasy drama series first arrived in 2011 and quickly became one of HBO’s most talked-about projects. Through eight seasons,Game of Thronesaccumulated an incredibly massive following and established itself as the most-watch show ever to grace HBO’s platform, pulling in over 46 million viewers. Unfortunately, many struggled to cross the finish line with the eighth and final season, but the stain hasn’t been enough to dampen audiences' desire for more content.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the developing live-action spin-off series will center its focus around Kit Harington’s Jon Snow, a character who became a long-lasting fan favorite throughout the original series' eight-season run. The 35-year-old actor’s solid performance earned him two Emmy nominations for his portrayal of Jon Snow, who facedexiled from Westerosin theGame of Thronesseries finale. The series will look to follow Snow as he leaves his old life behind to venture north of the Wall with the Wildlings.
Many believed the final season ofGame of Throneswould be the last time beloved characters such as Snow would make their appearance on HBO, but it appears the door has not entirely been closed on their stories. It’s unclear what direction HBO is sailing toward withGeorge R.R. Martin’s universe, but the arrival of this series could usher in the reemergence of characters such as Arya and Sansa Stark, who may receive series of their own to continue their adventurous journey.
What is known is the focus on the past, which HBO will explore inHouse of the Dragon. The highly anticipated series will be arriving on HBO on August 21st, centering around House Targaryen and the civil war that erupted throughout its house 200 years before the events that took place inGame of Thrones. In addition, the prequel will introduce a new cast of characters for audiences to connect with, which will further help to expand the fantasy universe. The return of Snow, however, was not something seen coming down the pipeline and may hopefully point toward more content focused on continuing the original story rather than retelling a history of how things came to be.
Beyond the news of Harington’s return, nothing else has surfaced regarding the newly developing series. It’ll be interesting to see where it falls in the sea of upcomingGame of Thronesprojects currently in the works at HBO and if the actor’s other filming commitments may prolong the series' arrival. Harington last appeared inMarvel Studios’Eternalsand most likely could have a prominent role in the MCU based on the direction the studio takes with his character. Nevertheless, Jon Snow looks to be returning to continue one of the more exciting journeys from the originalGame of Thronesseries.
