In theSpider-Mancomics,Cassandra Webb (a.k.a. Madame Web)is a woman afflicted by myasthenia gravis, a neurological disorder that causes blindness and paralysis, and her husband develops machinery for her that allows her to see visions. Sony has not confirmed whether Dakota Johnson is playing Cassandra Webb’s version of Madame Web, and she may be playing Julia Carpenter, a version of Madame Web with similar powers to Spider-Man. Interestingly, S.J. Clarkson, a notable director of series includingNetflix’sJessica Jones, has been confirmed as the film’s director, with the screenplay written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.

Madame Webis one of many Marvel spin-offs in the works by Sony. The studio is also working onEl Muerto, which starsmusician Bad Bunnyas the titular wrestler. Sony has also lined up a Kraven the Hunter film starringKick-Ass’s Aaron Taylor-Johnson as well as a thirdVenomfilm. Sony’s previous attempts to make a female-drivenSpider-Manspin-off,Silver & BlackandSilk, have not left the pre-production stages of development, meaning thatMadame Webis notable for doing what those films could not.

Celeste O’Connor is an underseen talent and a welcome addition to Sony’sMadame Web. The actor is joining the spin-off film at a time when superhero movies have become the most widely-seen genre by today’s most avid moviegoers, which increases O’Connor’s chance of getting their acting seen by as large an audience as possible. Rest assured, fans are more than happy to wish O’Connor good luck with the role.
