Marvel Championshas been growing for more than two years now and the game has already added three big box expansions, a handful of villain sets, and tons of extra heroes. As the card pool continues to grow, many fans have wondered whichcorners of the Marvel Universethe developers will turn to for inspiration next. As the Sinister Motives expansion release date approaches, it looks like one particular area of interest in the coming months is going to be the Champions heroes and their villains.
Some fans have beenhoping (and speculating) that the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, or the Defenderswould make an appearance in the near future to join the Avengers, but it seems like the late winter/early spring packs are turning their attention to some of the Marvel Universe’s younger faces. The Sinister Motives expansion includes both Miles Morales and Gwen Stacey as playable heroes and two follow up hero packs have been announced that will join Miles in expanding the roster of Champions heroes available for players.

The Nova (Sam Alexander) announcement came first in late January and now Fantasy Flight Games has also confirmed that Ironheart (Riri Williams) is going to be available in early 2022 as a playable hero. These two additions mean that the Champions trait now is printed across various heroes (including Ms. Marvel) and that could have some exciting gameplay impacts down the line as more synergies become available. When players are selecting their heroes for facing off against the Sinister Motives campaign mode, there could be some serious flavor and gameplay motivation to build a full team of Champions.
For those who aren’t familiar, the Champions are a team of teenaged superheroes similar to Young Justice or the Young Avengers. They have appeared in multiple comic book series over the years and lots of recent speculation suggests that the MCU is working to set up eitherthe Young Avengers or Championswith the groundwork layed on recent Disney+ shows.
Some fans are obviously still wishing for the game to pull in a bigger, more popular portion of the Marvel Universe (like mutants), but that doesn’t seem to be the plan for early 2022 at least. That said,Marvel Championsis still growing and there will likely be at least one more big box expansion arriving in later 2022 that could still go in that direction. At this point, no official news (or hints) have been revealed by Fantasy Flight Games about what the theme might be for the big box expansion that will be up next after Sinister Motives delivers the Spider-Man villain themed campaign this winter/spring.
