Kao the Kangaroo, the mascot platformer from polish studio Tate Multimedia, is set to make a comeback with a brand-new title set to be released later this year. Revivals of classic mascot titles have become all the rave since the release ofCrash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy, with franchise likeSpyro the Dragonand evenBubsyseeing a resurrection in one way or another.
Traction for a revival ofKao the Kangaroobegan back in 2019, after the second game in the series,Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2, was re-released onSteam. The game started attracting attention on social media with the #BringKaoBack campaign trending, with Tate Multimedia taking notice. In June 2020, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the series, Tate Multimedia announced development of a new title was underway, showcasing new concept designs for what the game would entail.

Now, a brand-new trailer forKao the Kangaroohas been released. The trailer, courtesy of IGN, showcases the game running onUnreal Engine 4, and what new adventures and challenges Kao will be up against with his super-powered boxing gloves.
The story ofKao the Kangaroofollows the anthropomorphic title character as he sets off on in search of his missing sister, all while battling various evil monsters that are influenced by a dark power. Unlike another Australia-themed mascot character,Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, which specializes in a more modern aesthetic,Kao the Kangaroolooks to be taking more fantastical influences, with sweeping jungles, frozen tundras, and even a volcanic setting.
So far,Kao the Kangaroolooks like an exciting addition to the platform pantheon, with plenty of fun action and spectacle to be had. In screenshots released for the game, several of Kao’s different abilities are showcased, as his boxing gloves carry a variety of attributes to help him navigate the world and defeat enemies, including a cast of impressive lookingboss battles.
While it may be awhile until another glimpse of the game is released, perhaps atthis year’s online-only E3, this stellar first look atKao the Kangaroohas fans excited so far. Tate Multimedia is promising a fun family-friendly adventure, and it will be fascinating to see ifKaois a franchise that can keep going following this title.
