Minecraft’sopen world comes with a variety of mobs for players to interact with. Most of the passive mobs will drop food that can be consumed to keep hunger up, but a few of these mobs also have additional functionalities, including being used as mounts to move from one point to another.

Currently, players can ride all types of horses in the game and their variants,Striders which are found in the Nether in lava lakes, llamas found in a few overworld mountain biomes, and pigs which are fairly common overworld mobs. Here’s how players can ride pigs inMinecraft, as there are a few important tools needed for this.
How To Ride A Pig In Minecraft
Pigs are not typical mounts in Minecraft. First of all, they won’t be able tocompete with horseswhen it comes to cost-efficiency and speed. The maximum speed of horses is nearly double of pigs, according to the Minecraft Wiki, so the choice of riding a pig is a bit inefficient and strange, usually done as a novelty thing.
That said, it’s a cool experience, one that does require two key items that players will need to get their hands on: a saddle and a carrot on a stick. Without these items, it’s impossible to ride a pig in vanilla Minecraft.

Find A Saddle
Saddles will be the difficult part of riding a pig inMinecraftbecause saddles cannot be crafted by the player as of right now. Saddles are instead considered somewhat valuable loot that can be found in a variety of locations inMinecraft’sworld.

First of all, players can go to a village and approacha leatherworker villagerand trade with them for a saddle. They have a 50/50 chance of selling one once they are a master-level trader, and this can take some time for players to level the villager up.
Another option is to go fishing. One of the possible loot options for fishing is to find a saddle, though players need to ensure they’re fishing in a location where they are able to find treasure loot. This means that AFK fish farms with one block of water won’t qualify to get a saddle.

The main method of getting a saddle that most likely all players will choose is to get it through structure loot or mob drops. A few select mobs will drop a saddle (Ravagers, Striders with Zombified Piglins, etc). Some locations will also have a high chance of containing a chest with a saddle, including villages, dungeons, Nether fortresses, desert temples, jungle temples, Bastion Remnants, End Cities, and strongholds. Desert temples, dungeons, and Nether fortresseshave the highest chance of dropping a saddle.
With such a wide variety of locations to look through, players are bound to come across a saddle at some point without too much effort.

Craft A Carrot On A Stick
Once players have a saddle ready, they’ll need just one more item before approaching a pig. In order to actually control the pig, players will need to craft a carrot on a stick. Simply combine a fishing rod with a carrot inside the crafting grid to get one.

Fishing rods can be crafted with three sticks and two pieces of string, and are also found as loot in ocean ruins protected by Drowned mobs. Carrots can be commonly discovered in villages on farms, or inside shipwreck chests, or they can even be dropped by zombies.Pillager outpostsalso have a chance of generating carrots in them, so if players come across one, ensure to check inside.
Find A Pig And Ride It
With both a saddle and a carrot on a stick acquired, players just need to find a pig. These arecommon passive mobsfound almost anywhere in the world, so this task shouldn’t be too difficult or time-consuming.
Saddle the pig and with the carrot on a stick in hand, players can guide it towards whichever way the carrot is pointed. It’s also possible to make the pig move faster if players use the carrot on a stick by pressing the use button, usually M2 for mouse and keyboard users. Keep in mind that doing this speed boost will take away a bit of the carrot on a stick’s durability.
