Mortal Kombat 11has become one of the most successful fighting games ever. Part of that success has been the result of the wildly diverse cast of DLC fighters that have made their way into the latest iteration of the series. However, this deep into its lifespan, it is probably safe to assumeMortal Kombat 11will not receive any further additions to its already impressive roster.

MK11has an impressive set of DLC fighters. Seemingly impossible match-ups exist withinMK11like Joker and the Terminator, or Spawn fighting Rambo. The franchise has become known for surprising guest fighters since the reboot that came withMortal Kombat(2011) on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Freddy Kreuger’s appearance in that title marked a trend that would culminate in the current hype around the idea of characters as diverse asOmni-Man fromInvinciblepotentially making his way intoMortal Kombat 11. It’s likely that this era of crossover combat has reached its end, though.

NetherRealm Studios' latest title is among the most popular fighting games for both last-gen and the current generation of consoles. The game’s popularity played into the decision to create anotherMortal Kombatmovie with new iterations of classic characters like Scorpion. That mass appeal led hopeful fans to look toward the continuation of roster additions in a rumored Kombat Pack 3. However, NetherRealm Studios is likely bogged down with at least one other fighting game, whether that be a continuation of the popularInjusticeseries or a potential Marvel IP.

Mortal Kombat 11 DLC?

NetherRealm is rumored to beworking on a Marvel Comics-themedfighting game. Rumors about this new IP run the gamut from a purely Marvel affair to an ambitious Marvel and DC crossover game. Warner Bros. ownership of DC Comics makes this unlikely, but NetherRealm has proven its ability to pull together disparate properties and licenses to great effect. Even if NetherRealm isn’t working on a Marvel game, it is still likely well into development something likeInjustice 3.

That being said, it is unlikely NetherRealm is still planning on bringing new characters intoMortal Kombat 11. Despite theenormous reservoir ofMortal Kombatcharactersthat are currently absent inMK11like Ermac, the team may be putting all of its energy into new games.MK11as a whole just turned three years old, and generally NetherRealm hasn’t dedicated the same amount of time to its flagship fighters before new releases as other companies with games likeStreetFighteror the relative newcomerDragon Ball FighterZ.Those two examples specifically represent franchises that typically see fewer releases than that ofMortal Kombat.

MK11has already established a very strong legacy, however, so fans of the series at large will still have a lot to look forward to as support for the game’s modes is unlikely to waiver - like with the constantly updated Towers that make up the bulk of the games PvE content. Given the studio’s likely commitment to eitherInjustice 3or therumored Marvel fighting game,Mortal Kombat 11may not see new DLC fighters, but it should still have a lot of life left in competitive circles.

Mortal Kombat 11is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
