According to the patent,Sonyis copyrighting a design that generates background music based on what is happening in the game. The plans, named Dynamic Music Creation in Gaming on the patent, reveal an outline for AI to create new music while the game is going on centered on the characters in the scene, the emotions the game is communicating, and the location the player is in. The AI even takes into consideration the personality of the person playing the game as it constructs the game’s soundtrack. Though the patent lists these as factors contributing to the music creation, it also says that this system isn’t limited to them, so there may be more aspects that can work themselves into the game’s music.
To bring all these different aspects of the gaming experience into the music, emotional factors will be assigned to a virtual fader. According to the patent, musical components accompanying these faders would be mapped against the larger, more tangible factors of the game such as the location and characters involved. The soundtrack would be tested on human reviewers and would likely be improved to match their emotional reaction to their personal gaming experiences.Sonyhasn’t revealed exactly where this system would be implemented, but it is explicitly stated that it is created to be used for gaming.
If this patent is farther along than the conceptual stage, it may be included in PS5 technology, but it isn’t certain that it’s reached that point yet. Developers have talked about how innovative this new gaming console will be when talking about its SSD andDualSense Controllers, so this new music generating technology would fit in well with the pieces of the PS5 puzzle that fans already know about.
