2021 has just begun and with it came a new pair of surreal trailers for Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ seriesWandaVision. Along withname dropping the Avengers in one trailer, the other has an interesting surprise forFrozenfans.
The officialWandaVisionTwitter account posted a new teaser trailer, which still appears to prefer keeping audiences as confused as possible. But while very little new information was given on these new adventures of Wanda Maximoff and the android Vision (as well as how Vision is alive again after his very canon death inAvengers: Infinity War), many viewers may have missed one tidbit that was staring them in the… ears? The aggressively retro and ultra happy theme song played during the trailer was written by none other than Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, known among many other accomplishments for writing much of the music from 2013’s mega-hitFrozen.

The husband and wife Lopez duo gained fame from their Oscar and Grammy-winningsong “Let It Go” featured inFrozen, before composing the also well-received “Remember Me” from 2017’s Pixar filmCoco, which also went on to win an Oscar. While they both boast a respectable amount of success, Robert Lopez garnered unique praise for not only earning an EGOT (when one person wins an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award), but being the youngest to do so. He also holds the honor of being the only person to win every EGOT award more than once.
TheWandaVisionaccount mentioned that the Lopez team had written “original theme songs,” suggesting that the piece heard in the trailer wouldn’t be the only product of their work heard when the series premieres. This would certainly be in line with their previous work, particularly theFrozenfilms, where they worked on several songs rather than just one. But whether or not their other contributions would keep with the same overall vibe as the one teased in the trailer has yet to be seen.
The song in the trailer emanates adistinct (and clearly intentional) callbackto themes from classic 50s and 60s TV shows likeLeave it to BeaverandThe Dick Van Dyke Show. Just like what Disney has shown of the show itself, the idea appears to be going all-in on the campiness of shows from that era to make audiences really feel the contrast when the series reveals its true intentions. Even the lyrics, featuring lines like “they’re a newlywed couple, just moved to town. A regular husband and wife,” drive home how on-the-nose the show apparently wants to be with that aspect.WandaVisionwants to thrust audiences into a classic sitcom world.
Since Lopez and Lopez are apparently responsible for more than one original theme inWandaVision, will audiences be treated to several with this same tongue-in-cheek idea behind them? Or might they get to experience another genuine, heartfelt piece from the duo likeRemember Me? Hard to say at the moment, but however it turns out, it will most certainly be a trip.
