Shocking the world earlier today, Microsoft announced it had made one of the biggest transactions in recent memory,acquiring Bethesda and its long list of blockbuster franchises. These includeDoom, Wolfenstein, Starfield, Dishonored,andThe Elder Scrolls,with Xbox quickly solving its widely touted exclusive problem by purchasing some of the biggest IPs on the market.
Of course, among these is the infinitely popularFalloutseries, which many would agree is a massive asset for Microsoft. Its acquisition also opens the door for a project fans have been clamoring to see for years, with many wondering whether fellow Xbox-owned studio Obsidian will finally get to make a follow-up to the universally acclaimedFallout: New Vegas.

One fan even directly asked the studio whether the huge deal would lead to a long-awaited sequel to the game, with Obsidian surprisingly not rejecting the idea at all. Responding to Twitter user Michael Hamilton excitedly speculating that “Fallout New Vegas 2 is a legit possibility now,” the team’s official Twitter account responded with a shrugging kaomoji, prompting many to believe the door is open wider than ever to a potentialNew Vegassequel. Evidently, Obsidian doesn’t seem opposed to the idea, although the team definitely has a lot on its plate before it can commit to returning to theFalloutuniverse.
The company revealedAvowedvery recently, with the Xbox exclusive RPG - almost ironically now - looking to offer a fantasy adventure in the same vein as Bethesda’s work onThe Elder Scrolls. It’s also working on building upon the foundation offered in the early-access version ofGrounded:its ambitious survival game that sees players shrunk to the size of ants and forced to survive in aHoney I Shrunk the Kidsinspired world. On top of both projects is the remaining DLC for its 2019 RPGThe Outer Worlds,with Obsidian vowing to release two slices of additional content for the previously released game.
TheFalloutfranchise could arguably use the reinvigoration a return from Obsidian would offer.Fallout 4,while enjoyable, was seen by many as a flawed follow-up to the series, whileFallout 76is generally looked upon as a disaster by the series' fanbase. An Obsidian-helmed sequel could be just what the franchise needs going forward, with many consideringNew Vegasto be the series' strongest entry since Bethesda took over the license. Here’s to hoping Obsidian can return to the wasteland in the years to come.
