One Pieceis on a pathway to becoming one of thebest shōnen anime/manga franchisesof all time with its global following increasing every year by leaps and bounds. Much credit for the success enjoyed byOne Pieceto none other than its creator, Eiichiro Oda, who is on a streak of producing some of the finest story arcs ever to have been produced in the shōnen genre’s history. However,One Piecehas started heading towards what could be its final saga with Luffy and the Straw Hat crew getting closer to facing reaching Raftel. What makesOne Pieceso phenomenal is the capability of Oda to keep things in suspense until the time is right to reveal them to his readers.

Oda likes making big revealsafter teasing his readers a lot, though not a big one, a reveal came with the release of chapter 1080 where Oda introduced his readers to the various members of the secret Marine organization Sword. It is a secret Marine squadron comprising some Marines and is headed by Marine Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp. Among the newly introduced characters, there is quite a unique character that is Navy HQ Commander Hibari. Let’s take a look at what makes her so unique.

Her Strength And Abilities

Hibari is a rather peculiarcharacter with unique abilitieslike being a highly skilled sniper, wielding a rifle for combat. She possesses incredible long-range support abilities, having the capability to disarm a whole crowd of gunmen while going undetected. In her arsenal, she has the gunpowder-modifying GP Flower technology developed by Dr. Vegapunk known as Flower Bullets which allows her to neutralize enemy guns by jamming their barrels with different kinds of blossoming flowers. She jammed the guns of the pirates on Hachinosu or Pirate Island with flowers. Even though her abilityseems like an outcome ofher having consumed some Devil Fruit, it owes credit to the crazy scientist of theOne Pieceworld, Dr. Vegapunk. Being a Marine Commander, Hibari has authority over lower-ranking subordinates. Her membership in the Sword implies her skills are among the best the Marines can offer.

Although she is powerful and quite promising as a Marine, she still has a long way ahead of her to become a great warrior as she is not experienced and strong enough to fight the enemies of elite stature likeBlackbeard Pirates' Tenth Titanic Captain, Kuzan Aokiji. She along with Koby defeated the pirates in front of them, she escorted Koby to Garp but could not open Koby’s shackles. She was then, to everybody’s shock, frozen by Kuzan who froze the former with his Logia Devil Fruit power. Because of the lack of skills to fight enemies that belittle her in terms of sheer strength and abilities, she somewhat unintentionally becomes a dead weight for her teammates. But it should also be kept in mind that for a young Marine like her, she is still performing quite well on the battlefield. However, she needs to go beyond her limits if she does not want to become a liability for her comrades while fighting some of the ferocious foes.

Relationship With Koby

She shares a strong bond with her comrade Koby as he has helped her in the past which has not been revealed much about. She respects Koby and deeply cares about him as she was the one who pleaded to her fellow Sword member and Marine Rear Admiral, Prince Grus, to do something about Koby’s kidnapping by the Blackbeard Pirates. Koby also cherishes his bond with her and tries to ensure her well-being. They care so much for each other’s well-being thatwhen Hibari was defrostedthe very first thing that she did was ask her comrades where was Koby and apologized to everyone for being a deadweight for them.

Hibari’s Past

There is little known about Commander Hibari’s past except that her fellow Sword member Captain Koby has helped her a lot in the past, which is why she is very grateful to him as could be observed from the former thanking the latter in the chapter. However, Oda has not revealed anything about her so far not even how she ended up under the leadership of Garp in Sword.

Maybe she might have an interesting story attached to her past that Oda is keeping veiled until the right time comes to unveil it. Her name refers to the Japanese name of the bird Eurasian Skylark, this signifies the theme followed byOne Piece’s creator, Eiichiro Oda, of naming female characters in the series after various birds. As far as her backstory is concerned and the backstory of most of the Sword members, fans of the series would only get to witness them if and when Oda decides to.
