Paper Mario: The Origami Kingwill soon be hitting the Nintendo Switch, and while there is still much to discover about the game, it turns out that players are capable of petting a Chain Chomp.

Chain Chomps are an enemy in theMariofranchise originating inSuper Mario Bros. 3.For those unfamiliar with the enemy, Chain Chomps are spherical metal entities with sharp gnashing teeth. Further, they are typically attached to something by a long chain, reminiscent of an angry bulldog eager to attack oncoming passersby.

These enemies have appeared in previousPaper Mariogames, often as enemies, in keeping withPaper Mario’s general adherence toMariolore. However, it appears as though players can pet Chain Chomps inPaper Mario: The Origami King, according to a clip tweeted by the Paper Mario UK Twitter account. The clip can be seen below.

Although the clip above is short, it shows Mario and two of his companions, Olivia and Bobby the Bob-omb, approaching a sleeping Chain Chomp. Olivia then pets the Chain Chomp, praising it as one would praise a dog, which employs the witty humor thePaper Marioseriesis known for.

However, players have yet to see howPaper Mario: The Origami Kingstands with the series altogether. Many players have found that the series has lost its way since the Nintendo GameCube’sPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, which proved to be an early pinnacle for the series. The new installment’s first review from Famitsu indicates that it is a quality game, though it is worth noting that the review score is on par with previous games likePaper Mario: Color Splash, which many players didn’t care for.

Yet,The Origami Kingis taking a few different approaches to distinguish itself from previous games. For example, thering-based battle systemrefreshes the turn-based gameplay with the ability to line up enemies for attacks on groups of them. While these aren’t the turn-based mechanics many adored inThe Thousand-Year Door, it could help give the game a unique identity within thePaper Marioseries.

Paper Mario: The Origami Kingwill launch June 13, 2025 on Nintendo Switch.
