The long-awaited fourth generationPokemonremakes,Pokemon Brilliant DiamondandShining Pearl, have now officially been released. The originals are beloved by fans of the series, with many of thePokemon BDSPreviewsbeing rather positive. Fans who are exploring the Sinnoh region have some Pokemon that are standout favorites of the roster. This includes the humble Bidoof, the plump mouse Pokemon that has earned the nickname “HM Slave” when it was introduced.

This nickname is tied to aPokemonmechanic known as the Hidden Machine, or HM for short. These were introduced in the first game, being special moves that players can teach a Pokemon in order to interact with certain elements in the overworld. These include breaking rocks, moving giant boulders, or cutting down trees that were blocking progression. Bidoof and its evolution Bibarel can learn a majority of these HM moves, which is how it earned its nickname from fans.

Players ofBrilliant DiamondandShining Pearlhowever won’t need to catch a Bidoof for this express purpose however, asHMs have been a bit more streamlined in this entry. Instead, the Poketch Watch has an app that can be used to call upon wild Pokemon, where they will then cut down a tree or move a rock that is blocking the way. These wild Pokemon will only appear if a player hasn’t already taught one of their Pokemon the HM move. Fans have discovered that some of the wild Pokemon that are summoned this way are Bidoofs and Bibarels.

Some of the early HMs that will summon wild Bidoofs are Cut and Rock Smash, while Bibarel can be summoned if using the move Surf. Fans of the original games have fond memories of catching these Pokemon, only to saddle them with these HM moves and never use them in battle, since the moves couldn’t be deleted, and their power was incredibly lackluster. Fans who discovered this rejoiced thatBidoof and Bibarelwere no longer saddled with the title, while others were overjoyed that the franchise is embracing their nature, even in a different execution.

Pokemon Brilliant DiamondandShining Pearlhave some of the most overworld obstacles of game in the franchise, so this function makes this an extremely streamlined way for trainers to explore the Sinnoh Region. It also pays tribute to a Pokemon that was famous for helping them traverse the tough terrain, even at the cost of taking up a potential party slot.
