With the ninth generation ofPokemongames on the horizon, it’s often easy to overlook some of the earliest Pokemon introductions to the franchise. The newPokemon Scarlet and Violetwill be released by the end of 2023, but very little is known abouthow many new additions to the Pokedex there will be.

A common trend with each new generation is similar-type monsters in the early game of each Pokemon game. Bird Pokemon are one of the best examples of this, with the Hoothoot and Natu lines introduced in thePokemon Gold and Silverand the Taillow and Wingull lines following the trend inPokemon Ruby and Sapphire.

It’s easy to fall in love with a new line of adorable monsters that are introduced in each new generation, but one Reddit user points out that Pidgey still exists. Introduced in the first generation,Pokemon Red and Blue,Pidgey was one of the first Pokemon players could run into, catch, and train up to become a Pidgeot. Discoverable in the first route of the game, the Pidgey line became one of the most reliable Pokemon in the series due to its ability to learn Fly and Mirror Move. Extremely fast and packing quite a punch, having a Pidgeot on a team heading into the Pokemon League to take on the Elite Four was routine for most players.

Unfortunately, Pidgey became an afterthought for manyPokemonfans, especially those who were introduced into the series by the time the third generation was released. By then, the Flying-Normal type Pokemon was less favored over Pokemon like Murkrow, a Dark-Flying type, or Xatu, the Psychic-Flying type. Flying types share similar traits, such as high-Speed stats and either a strong Attack or Special Attack dependent on the Pokemon’s secondary typing. Pidgey can still be used up until the seventh generation, with some games requiring players to receive it via trade, butthe line was discontinued inPokemon Sword and Shield.

In 2017,a bill was proposed to Illinois lawmakers with the title “Pidgey’s Law,“which would discontinue the use of real-life locations in the mobile gamePokemon GO. The bill did not receive the support necessary to pass and was ultimately rejected, allowing players to continue enjoying the game as it was meant to be played. The bill used the Pidgey name to reference the common appearance made by the Pokemon within the game, but with each new generation added, Pidgey frequents surrounding areas less each time. Despite its scarcity as of late, players of every Pokemon game can agree on the fact that Pidgey is, and always will be, the original bird that everyone loves and cherishes.
