The launch ofPokemon Scarlet and Violetlater this year will mark nine generations of main seriesPokemongames, dating all the way back toPokemon Red and Bluefrom the 90s. Each new generation ofPokemonintroduces a new region for players to explore, filled with familiar Pokemon as well as brand-new creatures to collect. The same holds true forPokemon Scarlet and Violet, though their new region has not been named at the time of this writing.

WhilePokemon Scarlet and Violet’s region doesn’t have a name just yet and official details about it are hard to come by, the reveal trailer suggests that the new games are set in a region based on Spain. EveryPokemonregionis based on an existing region in the real world, and it seems likePokemon Scarlet and Violetwill be carrying on that tradition with their new region.

AssumingPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s region is based on Spainas fans have guessed, it will bring the number of Pokemon regions set in European countries to three, preceded byPokemon Sword and Shield’s Galar region andPokemon X and Y’s Kalos region. There’s also been twoPokemonregions based on locations from the United States, withPokemon Black and White’s Unova region based on New York City andPokemon Sun and Moon’s Alola region taking inspiration from Hawaii.

Pokemon Regions and the Real World Locations They’re Based On

All otherPokemongenerationshave been based on different regions of Japan. There have been ninePokemongenerations so far and all have stuck with either the USA, Europe, or Japan, and so there are huge swaths of the world that have yet to be featured in the main seriesPokemongames. Some pointed out by Reddit user Fluffy_Mood5781 include Africa, Australia, and South America.

Since thePokemonfranchise remains incredibly popular to this day, there’s a chance that regions representing these neglected areas of the world will be introduced at some point down the line. After all, Nintendo and Game Freak will run out of European countries eventually. In the meantime, somePokemonfans have been taking it upon themselves to come up with their own regions based on the unused countries, with one artist showing off whatPokemon in an Indian regionmight look like.

Fans may be waiting a long time for regions based on other parts of the world, but in the meantime, they can look forward to checking out whatPokemon ScarletandViolethave to offer when they release for the Nintendo Switch later this year.
