The latestPokemonPresents has come and gone, revealing a ton of new content for a plethora of games:Pokemon Unite, Pokemon Masters EX, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and Pokemon Legends: Arceus. The “one more thing” announcement, however, was the reveal ofPokemon Gen 9 titles,Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet.

Not much is known about these two titles yet. The trailer shows off a world that seems more open than pastmainlinePokemongamesand as something more in line withPokemon Legends: Arceus. It also shows off some of the returning Pokemon, but in terms of new Pokemon, the only ones shown were the new starters. However, they were not named in the trailer.

Thesenew Pokemon Startersdo have names, though, revealed as the game’s official website went live. The grass starter, which is a green cat with a leaf pattern on its face and a leaf-shaped tail, is called Sprigatito in English (Nyaoha in Japanese). It is classified simple as the Grass Cat Pokemon, comes in a 1’4” tall and 9lbs in weight, and has the Overgrow ability.

TheFire Starterlooks like an apple combined with a crocodile, and its name is Fuecoco in English (Hogeeta in Japanese). Once again, it’s simply classified as the Fire Croc Pokemon, is the same exact height as Sprigatito but weighs 21.6lbs, and has the Blaze ability. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s final starter is the Water-type Duck, which has a pretty simple design but with a big blue hat, and its name is Quaxly.

Quaxly (Kuwassu in Japanese) is described as tidy Pokemon, is slightly taller than Sprigatito and Fuecoco at 1.8 inches and weighs in at 13.4lbs, and has the Torrent ability. As always, fans will be able to pick one of the three starters at the beginning ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet, though should they want the others they can always trade.

It’s too early to predict what their final forms may look like inPokemon Scarlet and Violet, but there are some pretty straightforward design choices here. At best guest, Sprigatito could become some type of grass jaguar, Fuecoco seems like it might be a huge Pokemon who throws its weight (and fire) around, and Quaxly could very well become some form of duck butler. Either way, fans are excited.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violetare set for release in late 2022 for Nintendo Switch.
