Though it seemed a strange combination at first, the combination between MOBA andPokemonhas been a popular addition to the genre. Releasing initially in July this year,Pokemon Unitesees characters from the famous Nintendo franchise battle it out in teams of five against other players. So far,Pokemon Unitefeatures over 30 unique Pokemon to choose from, each with its own unique role.
A new trailer has dropped forPokemon Unite,showing the Holiday Festivities event, which will feature new festive skins for Pokemon already in the game and the addition of Dragonite, the first-gen Dragon-type Pokemon. Dragonite is described as being a Melee All-Rounder character -much like the recently released Grass type Tsareena- that uses its “draconic might to dole out maximum damage.” Dragonite’s moveset includes some well-known Dragon-type moves from thePokemongames, like Dragon Breath, Outrage, and Draco Impact.

As part of the Holiday Festivities event, there will also be a new game mode added toPokemon Unite,called Snowball Battle. In Snowball Battle, Pokemon that are KO’d will turn into snowmen, and will be stuck as a snowman until they revive. Wild Pokemon in the central area will also be replaced by the legendary ice bird Pokemon Articuno, and finally, Delibird will appear. Once defeated, Delibird will drop a gift box with a random battle item. The addition of the Snowball Battle mode marks a new stride forPokemon Unite, as in theprevious Halloween Event, only new Pokemon and outfits appeared.
ThePokemon UniteHoliday Festivities begin on December 15 and will run right up to January 16. Though many are sharing their excitement at the upcoming event, there are others who would rather the developers set their sights on the problems withinPokemon Unite, rather than pushing new outfits and Pokemon. One fan in particular said that although they were excited for all of the new content, they would have rather had better matchmaking.Pokemon Unite’s matchmaking has seen some controversy over the months since its release. Back in September, a bug involvingLucario forced some players to stop playing Ranked matchesaltogether.
Matchmaking isn’t the only thing that dividesPokemon Unitefans. As with many modern games, microtransactions and pay-to-win mechanics have caused controversy with Pokemon’s foray into the MOBA world. Outfits for Pokemon have caused quite a stir within the community, and many fans were concerned when the game announcedHolowear at the bold price of $40 USD. WhilePokemon Uniteis free-to-play, many gamers wonder where the line is drawn between a fairly and ridiculously priced cosmetic.
