Despite releasing all the way back in October 2018,Red Dead Redemption 2is a game still chock full of mysteries. Many of theseRDR2mysteriesgo unsolved, with players still trying to understand the narrative around the time travel, the events of Mount Shann, and the location of the elusive third meteor. One such mystery is the voice behind the cave door, one many believed belong to a Bigfoot or Sasquatch, kin to those found in the original game, but the latest evidence reveals that this is not the case.

A recent datamine ofRed Dead Redemption 2YouTuber Strange Man reveals that this creature is more like a fantasy-classic cave or hill giant, complete with dialogue suggesting that it was once more interactable than it is now.

First, it’s worth addressing that several mysteries have been solved thanks to thePC version ofRed Dead Redemption 2. Dataminers wasted no time diving into the files once the game was released, revealing the magician’s trick on several characters sadly enough. For example, the legendary channel catfish has a model in-game, one that is complete FUBAR and was more of a Red Herring for players to hunt. Another example is the infamous"Where’s Gavin" character Nigelwho is still searching for his lost by 1907.

By then, though, his appearance, sanity, and more are drawn into question, and the PC datamine revealed that “Gavin’s character” is actually Nigel. Nigel is Gavin. Gavin is Nigel. It’s confusing. This basically leads to one of two conclusions: the first is that Nigel/Gavin has some sort of mental illness, split personality, or the like. The second is that the model is named after its search for Gavin, not for its own identity, which would just suggest that Gavin doesn’t exist.

In short, the answer to mostRed Dead Redemption 2mysteries is cut content, for better or worse.

This is the same for the Giant who hides behind the rock wall. For context, many believed it was aBigfoot or Sasquatch, something similar to the creatures that John Marston faces in the originalRed Dead Redemption. It makes sense to a degree given that the dialogue it does have is really kind and warm, not unlike the Sasquatches Marston hunts down. Yet, as aforementioned, a recentRed Dead Redemption 2datamine throws this out the window.

As it turns out, it seems the Cave Giant was once meant to be something more, seemingly complete with its own quest, background, and unique interactions. It may have originally been in an open cave near a small town, as for example, there is dialogue for the player robbing it. It pleads and begs before ultimately giving away its sole possession, whatever that is, and would become a witness asking a sheriff for help. This would only be possible if it were close to aRDR2town, perhaps even near the circus grounds it seemingly came from, as it’s clear that it loathes people but simply wants their love, not just be a spectacle.

Its dialogue almost makes it clear that it isn’t something that could be killed, likely only giving it to the robbery because of its kind nature. It’s a gentle giant, after all. There may have even been an escort mission for it, meaning players could see it model, as there is dialogue for the player stepping too close to its foot. Antagonizing the giant during said mission or at any time does reveal that it can become enraged and intentionally attempt to hurt/kill the player, whether that’sRDR2’s Arthur Morgan or John Marston, but it takes time as the giant will pretend the player is invisible, tell him to leave, and call him a bully.

Other dialogue includes a bevy of introduction phrases, greetings, commentary on it and the player’s friendship, and much more. In short, this mystery has been solved, and like many before it, is just a section of cut content from thehighly-ratedRed Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
