Resident Evilis a survival horror series known for serving up some pretty big scares and stretching its tendrils past gaming to encompass film and television, too. Although most titles in the series have relied on a third-person perspective, Capcom decided to switch up the traditional formula withResident Evil 7and allow gamers to play in first-person instead. The experiment was successful, as it forced players to get far more intimate with the dangers thrown at them, and the scares generated were so effective that Capcom reused the format forResident Evil Village.
Like manyResident Evilgames prior,Resident Evil Villageis scheduled to receive DLC. This was first announced in 2021, though Capcom has been relatively quiet about the details of the DLC since then. During Sony’s June 2022 State of Play event, it was revealed thatResident Evil Villagewill be making its way to PS VR2, sparking renewed interest inResident Evil Village’s DLC that was conspicuously not mentioned. At this point, if the DLC ever does see the light of day, it will have some tall hurdles to leap over.

Resident Evil Village Set the Bar High
Capcom already had ideas forResident Evil Villagein 2016, beforeResident Evil 7was released. It was during this time that the developers decided to focus on the village and to turn the setting into a central aspect of the game. Capcom took care to learn from its past releases and experience with theResident Evilfranchise, and the goal was to combine the action elements ofResident Evil 4with the slow-building survival horror elements ofResident Evil 7.
Fortunately for Capcom, it managed to find a good balance, and when the game launched in May 2021, it was a resounding success. To date, the game has sold around 6.1 million units worldwide, and it sits as one of thefastest-selling titles in theResident Evilseries.Resident Evil Villagehas also been lauded by critics, leading to the game snatching several awards, including the Ultimate Game of the Year award at 2021’s Golden Joystick Award show, the Best Performance award at The Game Awards 2021, and Steam’s 2021 Game of the Year award.

After the positive impressionResident Evil Villageleft on gamers, it will take a stellar DLC to live up to the expectations that the base game has set. It will require new scares, newResident Evilenemies, and new ways to verify that gamers are always on the edge of their seats. Fortunately, it is not an impossible task, asResident Evil 7proves that Capcom is capable of delivering quality DLC for theResident Evilseries.
