In 2016, PlayStation made history after becoming the first console manufacturer to enter the world of modern virtual reality gaming withPlayStation VR. In many ways,PlayStation VRwas responsible for widely commercializing virtual reality, with PlayStation VR shipping over 5 million units. Since last year Sony has been gearing up to promote PlayStation VR2, the successor to the company’s first foray into VR. While it’s not known when the device will release, it appears Sony might be gearing up for a big PlayStation VR event soon.

PlayStation VR first released in October 2016 as a PlayStation 4 accessory. The device was supported with major launch titles such asBatman: Arkham VRandUntil Dawn: Rush of Blood, and quickly became a success for Sony, with many crediting it with making virtual reality gaming accessible to mainstream audiences, with other headsets at the time requiring expensive gaming PCs. With PlayStation 4 being one of the biggest video game consoles of all time,PSVR was widely adopted and has continued to be supported by developersto this very day, even as Sony prepares PSVR2 for release.

Earlier this year, Sony confirmed many elements regarding PSVR2 including its name and revealing the device’s headset and controllers. The company also revealed the specifications for the device, which features a 4K HDR display and haptic feedback integrated into the headset itself.It also revealedHorizon: Call of the Mountain, a launch title for the device developed by Guerrilla Games and Firesprite. Sony has yet to specify when the device will release, what its price will be, or any other titles that will be available on PSVR 2. Now, a rumor from VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb claims that PlayStation VR 2 may be receiving its own dedicated event soon.

Speaking on his Giant Bomb showGrubbSnax, Grubb mentioned that he had heard Sony is planning a PlayStation VR2-focused event in the coming weeks while discussing three PlayStation rumors that have been circulating,one of which being the recently announced PlayStation Plus revamp. Grubb did not specify an exact time frame for the showcase, however he did reference the fact that many developers had the opportunity to play the device at Game Developers Conference last week.

2022 is set to be a huge year for PlayStation, given the studio has already announced its plans to revamp PlayStation Plus to follow in the form of Xbox Game Pass,is preparing to launch huge games likeGod of War: Ragnaroklater this year, and is also preparing a full rollout for the PlayStation VR2. It’s not known if the device will launch at all this year, however it is a possibility given it started making PSVR2 related announcements in late 2021.
