Summary
It’s looking increasingly likely that the 2015 Wii U exclusiveKirby and the Rainbow Curseis coming to theNintendo Switchat some point in the near future. It’s no secret that the Wii U was a sales failure for Nintendo, and so the company’s decision to port many of the platform’s biggest exclusives to theSwitchmade a lot of sense.
The Switch has enjoyed all kinds of Wii U ports since 2017, starting withThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which was released simultaneously on both platforms. In fact, one of the Switch’s most successful games,Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, was originally a Wii U game. TheWii U’s failure really helped bolster the Switch library, with ports of games likeSuper Mario 3D WorldandDonkey Kong Country: Tropical Freezegoing a long way to help ensure that the Switch never endured a content drought quite like the Wii U did.

There are still someWii U exclusivesthat have yet to find new life on other platforms, with one such game beingKirby and the Rainbow Curse.Kirby and the Rainbow Cursewas originally released in 2015 and earned somewhat mixed, but mostly positive reviews from critics at the time. A successor to the acclaimed Nintendo DS gameKirby: Canvas Curse,Kirby and the Rainbow Cursewas known for its claymatian art style and co-op support. Now, a new trademark filed in Australia has suggested thatKirby and the Rainbow Cursecould be making a comeback on the Switch.
As spotted by Vooks, a new Australian trademark forKirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush(the PAL name forKirby and the Rainbow Curse)has been filed even though the other one already exists. This, combined with theearlierKirby and the Rainbow Cursetrademark renewal, does seem to suggest that Nintendo is preparing to do something with the game at some point. This is entirely speculation at this time, but the most logical conclusion is thatKirby and the Rainbow Cursecould be gearing up for a Nintendo Switch port.
List of Wii U Games on the Switch
Kirby and the Rainbow Cursewasn’t the only trademark Nintendo renewed in Australia recently. It also renewed its trademark forFullblox, akaStretchmo.Stretchmois a3DS exclusivethat is no longer possible to purchase, so maybe it too will get a second lease on life through the Nintendo Switch.
Of course, it could be that Nintendo doesn’t plan on doing anything of note with these trademarks and the two games will remain trapped on their respective systems. As it stands, much of Nintendo’s 2024 slate remains a mystery, beyondPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Doorreleasing May 23 andLuigi’s Mansion 2 HDlaunching June 27. It’s entirely possibleKirby and the Rainbow CurseandStretchmowill be used to help tide fans over while they wait for the eventual release of the Switch 2, but that remains to be seen.
