Star Wars Battlefrontis an interesting franchise for several reasons, and perhaps earned its popularity amid a handful of less popularStar Warsendeavors in gaming due to its palatable gameplay loop.Star Warsfans were afforded a lot of customization and nostalgiathrough the characters they could play and which locations they could explore, but shooter fans arguably got the most out of it by having it be one of the less competitive shooters available. This allowed for a unique marriage of players, but it seemed doomed to always inevitably hit a wall when it came to the content it could adapt for future DLC.

Star Wars: Battlefront 3was apparently nearly finished when it was canceled, meaning that its developer obviously had enough content to justify having a third entry. It is unknown if this third reboot entry will ever see the light of day, whether in after-the-fact developer insights or through an actual resuscitation of the title, but it would be intriguing to hear how this threequel would have been able to offer content that wasn’t already inStar Wars Battlefront 2, which had gorged itself on plentiful content. The sequel’s content, however, was leashed to the series’ nine theatrical movies.

Star Wars Battlefront Shouldn’t Be Leashed to Theatrical Content

IfStar Wars Battlefrontwas able to branch out further than the nine movies that are easily the most popular parts ofStar Warshistory, a threequel could be infinitely refreshing and all-encompassing.Star Warsfans are undoubtedly opinionated and vocal about which trilogies they prefer more than others, but the fanbase has been more diplomatic and sophisticated when it comes to discussing animated endeavors from the IP, let alone otherStar Warsvideo games.

It would be incredible to see Galen Marek’s Starkiller fromThe Force Unleasheddash through a Manaan hangar bay with dual lightsabers, for instance, orHK-47 charging into battlealongside an army of stormtroopers on Bracca.Star Wars Battlefronthas had no issue featuring characters in eras and locations unfamiliar to them, and crossovers with otherStar Warscontent shouldn’t be an issue either.

Indeed, it would be great to see a bunch ofStar Wars Jedicontent added in a potentialStar Wars Battlefront 3, as well as content fromupcoming games such asStar Wars Outlaws, including Kay Vess and Nix or ND-5, the BX Commando droid that accompanies them. This could allow for an entire game’s worth of post-launch content on its own, but taking a look at eachStar Warsseries would also be a treat for a futureBattlefrontgame.

The Clone Wars,Rebels,The Bad Batch,Visions, and more could all provide a wealth of characters, locations, and weapons that aren’t necessarily featured in the nine mainline movies.Rogue OneandSolohave had their dues inBattlefrontandBattlefront 2respectively, but again those are live-action spin-off releases. The only considerable concern that could come from adapting animated content is that it might not translate well to a photorealistic graphical fidelity, but much of this animated content was already designed with that carryover possibility in mind.

Of course,Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalkerwere featured in live-action before their cartoon likenesses debuted inThe Clone Wars—coming full circle withThe Clone Wars’ actors voicing them inStar WarsBattlefront 2—and characters like Ahsoka Tano who debuted in animation have already made their transition to live-action seamlessly. Therefore, aStar Wars Battlefront 3shouldn’t have any issue adapting animated material to its art direction.

Star Warsis abundant with iconography and while the latestBattlefrontchose to concentrate on culminating the main theatrical run into a packaged experience, a thirdStar Wars Battlefrontwould do well to cherry-pick from those legacy characters and planets while instead turning its attention to other corners of the IP in order to discern who would be fun to see rushing out onto the same battlefields.
