This past week Aspyr releasedStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2on Nintendo Switch, less than a year after releasing the originalKnights of the Old Republicon the platform. Part of the promise that Aspyr made when it announcedStar Wars: KOTOR 2for Switch was that it would also be delivering a Restored Content DLC, too, but it has since confirmed the DLC will arrive post-launch. Further details have since been confirmed, with Aspyr making clear players will have to create a new save for the Restored Content when it’s available. In a series of tweets, Aspyr clarified the situation to fans who were curious about how the eventual release of theRestored Content DLCwould impact any ongoing game ofStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. One fan asked whether they will be able to use their ongoing save or if they’ll have to restart with a new game. Aspyr confirmed that any saves from the current version ofKnights of the Old Republic 2will not be compatible with the Restored Content DLC version ofStar Wars: KOTOR 2.RELATED:Rumor: Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Ports Are in the WorksWhile existing save files won’t be compatible withStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2’s Restored Content DLC,Aspyralso confirmed that players won’t have to delete their old save files. They’ll still be able to play the original version ofKnights of the Old Republic2, along with their saves, by selecting an option in the game’s main menu.

Long story short, the base version ofStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2and the Restored Content DLC version ofKnights of the Old Republic 2will effectively be separate experiences on the sameNintendo Switch game card. Players can pick one or the other, but can’t transition between the two.

To be clear, this news is neither surprising nor controversial. While details regarding the official Restored Content DLC have yet to be shared, the original mod forStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2is robust, to say the least. It’s a dramatically different experience that goes beyond restoring cut content.Save filescrossing over would be a very awkward transition.

While it makes sense for save files to be split, that doesn’t make it any less frustrating of a situation forStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2players on Switch. It’s going to take a very dedicated player to play through the base game and then restart for the Restored Content DLC. It’s still great for Aspyr to be creating the Restored Content DLC in the first place, though, if only forStar Wars' most dedicated fans.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2is available now on PC and Switch.
