Summary
Only being able to carry a limited amount of weight presents a common issue forStarfieldfans, and one popular video shared on social media demonstrates what happens when a player carries over 1 million kilograms of weight in the game. The encumberment system present inStarfieldis slightly different to those used in previous Bethesda titles, and while most other games from the developer contain a similar mechanic,Starfield’s take on it is considered by some to be the best so far.
The huge galaxy ofStarfieldcontains more loot than fans could ever dream of, but even just a single short trip to a planetary base can in some cases lead players to enough goodies to completely fill their pockets. This means a lot of slow back-and-forth trips to the ship every so often, but even then, players with only a small cargo hold aboard their ship will find themselves frequently needing to return to one ofStarfield’s hubs to dump the piles of stuff weighing them down. Some players have found an effective solution to the game’s storage issues bybuilding comically large ships inStarfieldwhich are capable of hauling hundreds of thousands of kilograms, but such projects are extremely expensive.

Investing in certain perks inStarfieldcan certainly allow players to carry more on their person, but the human body still has its limits. Filling the mass meter past the recommended carry weight not only drains oxygen much faster, it can even cause physical harm if too much carbon dioxide is built up in the body, and some players may not be aware of how quickly this can happen when carrying too much past the limit. One clip shared on Reddit by the user BountyKraken demonstrates how severe this effect is when carrying more than 1 million kilograms of mass, with the player taking substantial damage after walking just a few short steps.
Lots of players have complained about the constant requirement to offload cargo and regulate carry weight, but many alsoconsiderStarfield’s weight mechanicto be the best iteration of the feature out of all Bethesda’s games. Unlike in other games, being over-encumbered doesn’t automatically reduce movement speed, instead introducing a negative effect which intensifies depending on how much mass is carried. This allows players to choose how much carry weight is acceptable to them personally, while also letting them control their movement speed to accommodate that.
Starfieldstill has a few kinkswhich could yet be ironed out in future patches, with one common complaint among fans being that large amounts of loot are hard to actually sell off due to most vendors having so few credits. Bethesda have already stated that it intends to improve the game based on community feedback, so it’s likely that some of the game’s problematic mechanics will see some adjustments in the future.
Starfieldis available on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
