While promoting his most recent film,Minions: The Rise of Gru, actor Steve Carell shared a story about one of his worst audition experiences, which involved some very disgusting French fries.
While Carell has had a long and impactful career as both a comedic and dramatic actor, he wasn’t always the household name he is today. Around the early 2000s, Carell’s career took an upturn when he was cast in a role that would come to define his entire career: the inept but lovable Scranton paper company manager Michael Scott in thehit NBC sitcomThe Office. Carell portrayed Scott for seven seasons on the award-winning sitcom, which earned him wide recognition and accolades. Around this time, Carell began to star in several big studio comedies, including hit films such as Judd Apatow’sThe 40-Year-Old Virginand the Will Farrell comedy,Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Carell told a story from when he was a young up-and-coming actor trying to make it in the industry. According to Carell, one of his early auditions for afast-food commercialinvolved some very dry, very stale day-old French fries. “I remember I was auditioning for a fast food restaurant commercial, and I had to eat fries for the audition,” Carell said. “But it so happened that the fries were a day or two old, and they were very dry. I’m even drying up just thinking about it. And once I ate a couple of the fries, I started choking because they were so dry. I couldn’t even say the lines, and I didn’t get the part.”
Carell eventually made the jump to more dramatic roles, in films such asFoxcatcher,The Big Short, andVice. He even earned an Oscar nomination for his role as real-life convicted murderer John Eleuthère du Pont inFoxcatcher. However, over the years Carell has still maintained a comedic edge, and he also appeared in various romantic comedies such asCrazy, Stupid Love, andDate Night. Carell has also starred in several TV shows in recent years, including the Apple TV Plus seriesThe Morning ShowandNetflix’sSpace Force. While Carell tragically did not get the role for the fast-food commercial he auditioned for, the actor did actually appear in a McDonald’s commercial in the 1990s, which is available to watch on Youtube.
