Resident Evil 5first launched all the way back in 2009, yet it’s getting a new update in 2023, 14 years after it was originally released.Resident Evil 5has proven to be a more divisive entry in Capcom’s long-running horror franchise, though it certainly has its fans. The game retained the basic gameplay style ofResident Evil 4, but added co-op to the mix. It received widespread praise for its gameplay, replay value, and co-op, but did earn some criticism for its more action-oriented approach and the shortcomings of its AI companion in single-player.

Despite the hardcoreResident Evilfans being somewhat split onResident Evil 5, the game was aknockout success for Capcom, and actually held the record for the publisher’s best-selling game for nearly a decade. The new update may make fans who haven’t playedResident Evil 5in years return to it, though it should be noted that the update is specific to the PC version of the game.

Those playingResident Evil 5on Steam were treated to a fresh update for the action horror game that removed the Games for Windows Live requirement, added local split-screen co-op, and even fixed some of the lingering bugs. Previously, PC gamers were only ever able toplayResident Evil 5co-oponline. It’s unclear if many people will get much mileage out of the sudden addition of split-screen co-op, but it’s still nice to see the feature added, even if it’s 14 years late to the party.

Split-screen co-op inResident Evil 5gives players the chance to play through the entire campaign together, with one player controllingfranchise mainstay Chris Redfieldand the other controlling Sheva Alomar. Players are able to go through the story together and then replay the entire adventure as much as they’d like to upgrade weapons, purchase new ones, and conquerResident Evil 5’s higher difficulties. Split-screen also extends toResident Evil 5’s Mercenaries mode, so anyone revisiting the game should have plenty to do with their friend.

TheResident Evil 5update comes just a month beforeCapcom launches the long-awaitedResident Evil 4remake. It’s possible that Capcom will eventually pursue aResident Evil 5remake as well, but that remains to be seen. For now, fans will have to stick with the originalResident Evil 5, and at least now those on PC can play through the game in split-screen co-op.
