The Quarryfeatures multiple opportunities for pushing characters together or making them kill each other through player choice and dialogue, but one easily missable conversation features an intriguing choice for players. Supermassive Games has included an optional same-sex kiss inThe Quarrybetween camp counselors Dylan and Ryan, making it a first for the developers.
Games likeUntil Dawn(also by Supermassive Games) with a branching narrative offer the same level of romantic attachment, butthe amount of LGBTQIA+ romance in gamesis still lacking when compared to heterosexual standards. However, it can be disregarded by players if they do not wish to include this scene in their story, or simply want to see different story options.

Ryan Kisses Dylan + Kaitlyn; Why It Matters
This opportunity presents itself when the camp counselors are playing Truth or Dare; some unresolved romantic tension and flirting from earlier chapters come back in full force. This ends up causing the necessary drama which results in the group splitting up and having to defend themselves againstThe Quarry’s monstrous enemies lurking in the dark.
As a result, certain moments of optional dialogue can build upon the cast’s characterization, depending on whom the player considers a better ship.

Around the campfire, the Truth or Dare questions fall to Ryan. The player can pick either ‘TRUTH’ or ‘DARE’ as the game dictates; to unlock the kiss choice, he needs to choose DARE.
Picking TRUTH instead adds some more information about his connection with Chris Hackett and the other counselors, but there is no kissing option as a result.

Ryan’s typically low-key attitude slips into gear as Emma gives him the choice. Both Kaitlyn and Dylan have a crush on Ryan, made evident by Dylan’s furtive flirting alongside Kaitlyn outwardly stating it to Jacob in Chapter 1. Ryan himself mentions later on that he doesn’t mind the attention he receives from either of them, hinting that he isn’t attracted to just a single gender.

What Does the Kiss Change in The Quarry?
The Quarrycontains lots of endingsand, in turn, dialogue choices. Some of these can be impacted by events that have happened in previous chapters, usually indicated by an on-screen prompt telling the player how a character is feeling in response to a situation. For example, choosing to kiss Kaitlyn will leave Ryan somewhat disappointed at the missed opportunity.
Kaitlyn kissing Ryan is much like Dylan’s response: a polite yet earnest peck on the lips. This is understandable for both parties, as their admitted crush on Ryan is given a chance to bloom.
This serves as a dramatic contrast to Emma and Nick’s subsequent kiss, which kickstarts the drama, resulting in these sweet moments often being ignored by players. Conversely, choosing the Dylan path results in a few catcalls from the girls, including a jealous Kaitlyn, plus a sweet comment from Ryan about there being more to Dylan than meets the eye.
Unfortunately, the kiss decision does not impact story choices that lead to different endings. Keeping characters alive is usually determined by the player’s success with Quick-Time Events andlife-or-death choices towardsThe Quarry’s ending.
Some players have estimated that 90% of dialogue choices do not affect the story outcome, instead focusing on character development in the background.
This may be a disappointment to some players, butThe Quarryis about more than just unlocking all endings. The vibrant cast of characters is the vehicle used to sellThe Quarry’s concept of classic horror movie tropesas they attempt to survive the night with their lives and relationships intact. In turn, giving the player the ability to be friendly to specific group members.
All theQuarrycharacters have their own charmsand quibbles to establish themselves as well-rounded individuals. This intentional decision by the developers allows their friendships to feel more organic and compelling, with no clear outlier or villain among the nine protagonists.
The only decision remaining is who the player prefers to ship through their numerous playthroughs ofThe Quarry.
The Quarryis available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
