The Witcher 3: Wild Huntallows you to store an unlimited amount of items in your inventory, but that does not mean you should. Every weapon and armor, among other items, that you come across in the open world weighs a certain amount. Hence, you need to be wary of your carrying limits.
Getting ambushed by monsterswith an overloaded inventory is not something you want, but hoarding items to sell later is also an excellent way of making money. So, what do you do? You follow the middle path by increasing your carry weight capacity inThe Witcher 3.
Geralt, like all people, is only able to carry a certain amount of weight. You will start with a default inventory weight of 60, which can then be increased to reach the maximum carry weight of 250 inThe Witcher 3. That is not counting the +20 bonus weight capacity obtained from the Fiend decoction—more on that later.
Keep hoarding everything you come across, and you will eventually hit the maximum weight cap to become over-encumbered. You will no longer be able to sprint in this condition. Combat will become sluggish due to low mobility. Most importantly, theability to fast travelwill become unavailable; though, you will still be able to ride Roach.
The debuffs can be immediately removed by dropping items from your inventory to reduce your weight, but a better long-term solution is to just increase your total load capacity.
The Witcher 3originally had weight stats for all crafting and alchemy ingredients. Hence, a single stack would weigh as much as chest armor in some cases. Thankfully,Patch 1.07 removed the weight from all ingredients. They now weigh 0, in case you are returning after a long break.
How to carry more weight in The Witcher 3
There are several ways to increase the maximum inventory weight you can carry in the game. These boil down to finding better saddlebags for Roach, unlocking the Strong Back ability from the skill trees, and drinking the Fiend decoction potion for a temporary buff.
Get new saddlebags for Roach
The best way to increase your carry weight inThe Witcher 3is byupgrading Roach with better saddlebags. They are easy to find as random loot or quest rewards and are not at all expensive if you decide to purchase them instead.
You can buy your first saddlebag from Willis, the amateur armorer in White Orchard, after completing his Twisted Firestarter quest. It will increase your maximum load capacity by 30. You can also buy it from Bram next to the Woesong Bridge. He is the one who you save from a Griffin attack while making your way to White Orchard. Both merchants will sell you the early-game saddlebag for roughly the same amount.
The Beauclair saddlebags are the best late-game saddlebags to get inThe Witcher 3. They are the only saddlebags that increase your carry weight by 110. They, however, are exclusive to theBlood and Wine expansion pack. Head over to Toussaint and buy the Beauclair saddlebags (and the Beauclair saddles and blinders) from any armorer.
If you do not own the expansion pack, you’re able to get the Zerrikanian or Undvik saddlebags to boost your total load capacity by 100. The former can be bought from the merchant in Novigrad’s Putrid Grove, while the latter from the armorer in Skellige’s Kaer Trolde Citadel.
Unlock the Strong Back ability
Strong Back is auseful ability for hoardersthat can be unlocked from the General skill tree (white) at the cost of a single skill point. It permanently increases the total carrying weight capacity by 60, allowing you to carry more inventory before becoming encumbered.
Drink the Fiend decoction potion
While notone of the best decoctions in the game, the Fiend decoction potion can be pretty useful if you find yourself encumbered out in the world. It increases your maximum load capacity by 20 inThe Witcher 3. The buff lasts only 30 minutes, which should be enough for you to reach the nearest town to sell ordismantle all of your junkand free up space.
Decoction recipes can be bought from merchants, learned by reading books, or found randomly in chests while exploring the open world.
You can craft a Fiend decoction with the following ingredients:
you’re able to buy all the aforementioned crafting ingredients (including the Dwarven spirit recipe) from the Herbalist in White Orchard. Head southeast from the White Orchard Inn and Woesong Bridge (the starting area) to reach an Abandoned Site. Defeat all the level 2 Ghouls here to liberate the area, which will convince the nearby villagers and a Herbalist to return.
The Fiend mutagen, however, can only be obtained by killing either a Fiend or Morvudd. The earliest Fiend that you can encounter inThe Witcher 3is during theReturn to Crookback Bog questafter agreeing to help rescue Anna, the Bloody Baron’s wife. Make sure to get this secondary quest donebefore starting the Isle of Mistsor else the whole questline will fail.
How to get unlimited carry capacity in The Witcher 3
There are several mods that increase your weight limit beyond what the game allows.Over 9000is one such mod that sets your carry weight to 9000, which is more than enough inventory space to hoard everything from crafting and alchemy ingredients to weapons and equipment inThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
The mod is also compatible with themassive next-generation update, so you should have a smooth experience without crashes and technical woes. That being said, installing this mod to bypass the encumbered effect does fall into cheating, which is something to consider for role-playing enthusiasts.
Note that there are numerous other mods that either increase your total carry weight or make you immune to becoming over-encumbered. Not all of them are compatible with the new version of the game, so make sure to check the mod’s patch notes to confirm compatibility before installing them.
Always make a backup of your save file before installing mods. Even if you have confirmed their compatibility, there is no guarantee that a third-party file will not damage your game. There is nothing worse than having to start from scratch because your save files got corrupted.
